Somebody suggested that we should let AI have a shot at Jessica Chastain in Lawless.
On the one hand, that is the greatest suggestion in the history of suggestions. She is one of the most beautiful women ever to appear on screen, and she did a full-frontal scene. We could kinda see that she was naked, but we couldn’t make out any details because the scene was basically lit with a Bic lighter. If you look at that scene in a small window, you’ll think your video player isn’t working at all. It’s just blackness. If you play it full-screen, you can see outlines, but not details.
Which leads us to the other hand. AI is brilliant at taking a 90% image to 99%, but there’s not so much it can do with a 25% like this one. There are no good pixels to work with, so everything is a guess. AI is not magic. There is only so much it can do. The system will produce beautiful images, and pretty good videos, but it’s not really Jessica brightened. It’s 25% Jessica and 75% imagination.
With that caveat here are the results.

Not a total loss now we know how to effectively use it where it is most applicable. It’s still better than nothing
Also is the ai better at darker scenes or color tinted scenes?
It seems to do better at removing the color filters because in that case it is able to keep the shape of the face exactly the same. It doesn’t really matter whether, in color-correction, it is wrong about skin tone, because our faces change color all the time naturally, depending on the lighting we’re in. But it’s a failure if AI tries to reconstruct a dark scene and makes and the face unrecognizeable.
In other words – AI has to guess in both cases, but a bad guess on skin tone is unimportant, while a bad guess on facial appearance is a critical error.
