The scene is a very highly sanitized version of the account in the book itself. It has been many years since I read the book, so my memory may be faulty, but if I remember correctly, in the original written account, Emma Goldman ends up stripping McGovern’s character entirely out of her clothes, gets her to recline on the bed, gives her a massage including, eventually, a massage of her pussy, all while the male character watches from the wardrobe. The scene in the book ends as the man masturbates while he watches, loses control, and stumbles out of the wardrobe as he shoots his wad all over the reclining McGovern character. Great book.
I wish we could have seen that in the film, but it’s still a good scene, thanks to McGovern’s body and Brad Dourif’s special brand of creepiness, which revealed that the character was too naive to be considered really creepy. He was more like a child in an adult body. I can see why Milos Forman cut this scene from the theatrical release. In its entirety of nine minutes, the scene was too long to include in the film because it would have spent too time focusing on a minor subplot, and would therefore have slowed the main narrative to a crawl. I get that, but I wish we could have seen a short version of it.

By the way, the theatrical release of Ragtime was rated PG, despite a nude scene that was more than three minutes long and showed most of the fun stuff. I like that scene. I like the film as well.
You get a very brief (and somewhat long-range) glimpse of bush behind her hand at the beginning of the shot. Lovely. And lots of views of her nice breasts throughout. Good for her for doing this scene.

The one we’re looking for is the scene from the workprint. It’s about nine minutes long – a discussion between McGovern and the actress playing Emma Goldman. I assume it is in B&W, since it was in B&W on the DVD (in censored form).

It was one of my favorite books, but my memory of it is very dim.
I just found my old copy of the book on our shelves. My memory was not wrong. The scene in the book was as I recounted, with a minor correction: in the book, Emma Goldman’s massage includes just a brief stimulation of the McGovern’s character’s pussy, and after than McGovern’s character continues with self-masturbation as the male character watches from the wardrobe…leading to the ‘climax’ of the scene that I referred to. It is at the end of Chapter 8.

She has had an interesting life and career. She has worked pretty steadily as an actress on film, TV, and the stage (NYC and London). She is a singer-songwriter, plays guitar and fronts a band that has released numerous albums and played various festivals. She has been married to a film producer since 1992, has two kids, and lives in London.
Yeah, I hate the Paramount Presents line, if you miss something they get hard to get at a decent price. Also this was released in 2021, so about 5 years ago now, so it’s to be expected with this FOMO line that Paramount has.
However, this released for ~$30 and there’s one on Ebay for $50+S/H (which isn’t bad if you enjoy the movie).

Like Scoop, I am a fan. I think McGovern’s career makes her a showbiz treasure. Downton Abbey was a fitting culmination of her work’s excellence.
