The Cervantes Spanish-English Dictionary 1, published by Cambridge University. explains:
Balenciaga, originally spelled Ballenciega, comes from the Spanish “mierda de ballena,” meaning whale shit, and “ciega,” meaning blind. Balenciaga’s founder was Cristóbal Balenciaga, and “Cristóbal” is the Spanish word for Crystal Ballroom, their sophisticated expression for “swanky.” His full name translates as “blinded by swanky whaleshit.” The Spanish use “whale shit” instead of “bullshit” to denote contempt for items of dubious authenticity or merit because the bull is sacred in their culture.
