Johnny’s notes: Into the 1990s and this year is surprisingly deep with the amount of nudity in movies. There’s quite a bit of nudity in movies like An Angel At My Table, Bloodmoon and the weird erotic psychological thriller Fantasy. Also a few international co-productions and foreign actresses turn up…

Are you still enjoying the show Scoop? Why/why not? 🙂
I’m not sure my opinion is worthwhile because I am a total sucker for anything Robin Hood, King Arthur or Don Quixote, anything that breathes life into idealism and true justice.
Bottom line: it’s my favorite watch among current offerings. (Well, maybe tied with South Park, which has been utterly nuts this year.)
In this case, I really enjoy the life and complexity they have breathed into some of the minor characters. Maid Marion, the Bishop, and Earl Huntingdon have been exceptions, so far, but all the other characters are multidimensional. Friar Tuck is not a cartoon character, but a true Christian who hates what the Church has done to the words of Jesus. Eleanor of Aquitaine has plots and spies going every which way (in this version Henry II is still alive). The Sheriff of Nottingham wants to govern reasonably, but he can’t appear to be soft, and Robin is creating anarchy. The Sheriff’s daughter is fascinating – strong-willed and horny, yet conservative and snobbish.
As for the weaknesses, here are some comments from episode 3.
Scoop
It makes no effort to be historically accurate. The authors either don’t know or choose to ignore the fact that the Saxons had been Christian for centuries before the Norman invasion. The famous St Augustine arrived in what is now England in the 6th century. Several Saxon churches still stand.
The show has elements of the hackneyed “old gods vs new gods” trope (hey, it worked for Game of Thrones), including not just belief, but also actual interference by the pre-Christian gods in human life.
You have to accept that it is an imaginary world like GoT, even though the places and many names correspond to historical characters. If you’re willing to ignore your instinct to say “none of that could have happened,” and just accept it as a fantasy on its own terms, it’s fun.

I find it best to suspend all reality when watching dramas set in Anglo Saxon times.
Perfect teeth – not likely.
Clean sheets – what? Fresh out of the washing machines?
Glass in the windows? – Not to be expected until around 16th century.
Machine sewn seams on the straps hanging over the foot of the bed and the cushions?
Me again.
That lace nightie Tamara is wearing is very fetching, although it looks to me on closer inspection (a dirty job but one has to do it) that there is a pattern made up of five squares that repeat at regular spacings. So machine produced then.
The first mechanized lace-making machine was invented in 1813 in Nottingham (so geographically correct at least).
It’s though that lace craft arrived in Britain in the 16th century, with a significant wave of Flemish Protestant lacemakers coming to England between 1563 and 1572, so even assuming it wasn’t machine produced a lace nightie like that isn’t going to be available to Tamara for another couple of hundred years or more. The general consensus is that Robin Hood was active 1190s. The earliest literary references to the character appear much later in the 14th century.
Nevermind though, I’m just going to go back to the photo and turn my attention to that lovely little nipple poking out of the garment that won’t appear for several hundred years.
