He loved the smell of napalm in the morning.
You all know about his roles in Apocalypse Now, M*A*S*H and The Godfather, but did you remember that he has played both Ike and Stalin (not one of his best efforts), or that he was Boo Radley in To Kill a Mockingbird, or Robert E. Lee in Gods and Generals? He left an amazing legacy. You could make an argument that he was the most successful character actor in history.

John Cazale did go 5 for 5 appearances in “Best Picture” noms, but yes, Duvall was in a class by himself. As you noted, there are the high profile roles like Tom Hagen and Gen. Kilgore, but he was also Ned Pepper, Adolf Eichmann and THX-1138. And he was in “Newsies!”
The Academy Awards will be presented on March 15 (about a month from now). Do you suppose there’s a cutoff date for being edited into the “In Memoriam” montage? If Mel Brooks were to keel over on March 14, would we hear some poor editor screaming “God-DAMMITT!”
I guess they probably have some segments ready to add, as The New York Times has obituaries pre-written for the sick and elderly.
For those with significant careers, like Brooks and Dick Van Dyke, I suppose they already have more than just pictures, but montages ready to plug in. I don’t think Mel would even make them blink. Now if somebody unexpected were to die on March 14 – let’s say Timothee Chalamet is in an auto accident – that would definitely throw them a curveball.
Was he ever in a nude scene? Just for the record if we are on a blog which deals with nude scenes.
Yes, “Rambling Rose” with Laura Dern. She provided the nudity thankfully. And in “The Handmaid’s Tale” he has sex with Natasha Richardson while she lies between Faye Dunaway’s legs. I don’t remember if there was any nudity though.
Your best bet is THX 1138, where he did a nude scene with Maggie McOmie.
That AZ site does male nudity as well. There is a Duvall page, with clips and captures.
In addition, Mr. Skin’s male site lists his nudography.
I think you could make the argument that he had more range then any American actor in the last century. Tom Hagen, LTC Kilgore, Gus McRae, Bull Meecham, Boo Radley, etc. and never for a second was not believable in any of them. As great as DeNiro and Brando are/were, I can’t see them playing all of those roles.
It was interesting to hear him talk about movie sets. He seems like such a no-nonsense guy, but he talks about how much he enjoys working with goofballs and pranksters who make the set fun, like Bill Murray and his friend Jimmy Caan. Obviously, he had a layer there that wasn’t immediately evident.
Much under-rated (not an all-time great, but solid and never mentioned) – Second-Hand Lions; Duvall is really good in it.
Duvall also directed The Apostle, which is kind of an amazing film and, if I recall, the first screen appearance of Walton Goggins.
Nope. He was in multiple (bad) TV shows, and more than a few films before that. I had to check because I was *sure* he was in “The Next Karate Kid”, and he was.
It was, however, the first thing he ever did that I remember *noticing* him.
So we’ve lost James (Van Der Beek), Bud (Cort), and now Robert (Duvall).
I know celebrity deaths come in threes, but why is is never Kim, Kourtney, and Khloé?
We also lost documentary filmmaker Frederick Wiseman, songwriter Tom Kelly, and just now, the Reverend Jesse Jackson.
