I know it’s not exactly a hot issue at the moment, but it crossed my mind for some reason, and I decided to tinker with it a bit. It’s difficult to work with a back-lit subject when the camera is shooting right into the sun, and it’s even more difficult when the image is tiny to begin with, but I took a shot at blowing it up and trying to create natural skin tones. I’d say I failed, but it was an interesting experiment.
I’m not suggesting that the image is a body double, but just noting that with all that magnification, the image came out looking like Faye Dunaway.
It always seemed to me that Cate was wearing a discreet, see-through thong in that scene, but it was still quite noticeable if you looked closely

Huh, I just went and rewatched the scene, and I definitely saw she’s wearing thong underwear– it’s almost the same color as her skin tone, but it seems pretty clear.
Here are some raw 4K captures. You can sort of make out a thong on the rear view, but I still see no trace of it from the front. Even in 4k, the images are too tiny to be clear, and they become fuzzier when I multiplied them by several X.
A thong would certainly be a logical conclusion.
What I saw was this color-corrected version they have on AZNude (I’m not sure the sourcing of it), but it makes the thong pretty clear.
While I agree with you that she’s probably wearing a thong, I would not accept that altered clip as evidence of reality. It seems to be AI enhanced, and AI makes assumptions. USA-based AI will even add clothing to nude scenes. In order to get Sissy Spacek’s shower scene in Carrie enhanced by AI, I had to discard all the American stuff and use a Chinese model, because the American models kept adding thongs and even t-shirts.
When you enlarge the REAL 4K screen grab to 64K, the best you can conclude is that there might be a thong.

Yes, she was topless in that scene; you can see her breasts when she bends over. But she’s definitely wearing a thong, modesty protection, or something like that.

In a way, I must say that Demi Moore, Emma Thompson, and Nicole Kidman were much braver… They nude scenes explicitly and very visibly, and all of them were almost 60 years old or even over 60. Especially Emma Thompson and Demi Moore, who did full frontal nudity after 60 years. Unfortunately, Cate Blanchett never nude scene, she never truly did, not even when she was at the peak of her beauty and popularity.
