This series turned out to be a colossal waste of my time. It’s one of those shows filled with sex, but almost no nudity.

A heartbreaking, bittersweet farce about the holocaust. In French and German. Filmed in Romania.

In 1941, after being alerted by the village fool of an imminent German invasion, the inhabitants of a small Jewish village in Central Europe organize a fake deportation train so that they can escape the Nazis and flee to Palestine through Russia. Some Jews are dressed up with German uniforms, and soon they start getting strange ideas about how it feels to be a Nazi; others are infected with the fast-spreading germ of communism. Meanwhile, the Russian border gets closer and closer.

Erotic thriller from Spain

The gorgeous Margot supports her aged father by seducing men on trains, slipping them a Mickey Finn (a beso de sueño) and robbing them of money and jewelry. One night her victim is a currency smuggler taking 100 million pesetas out of Spain. He’s being watched by a cop and by a burned-out alcoholic, Salvatierra, who does occasional jobs for a corrupt banker; they are quickly on Margot’s trail. The cop suspects Salvatierra of working with Margot, but Salvatierra has his own agenda. He becomes Margot’s protector; is it for his own good or for hers as well? And what are these feelings that develop between the two of them? Where will the money end up?

I didn’t really know about Maribel until I started the Fun House, so long ago, but she immediately became one of my favorites, and has remained so. One of the spookiest things about doing this site is that all of us have aged, but Maribel looks exactly the same now as she did when the site began. This film was made in 1992:

And here she is in 2025. Based on Maribel, I can’t figure out why Ponce de León was looking for the Fountain of Youth in Florida. It was obviously home in Spain all along.

Then again, I guess you can’t really do any decent conquistadorin’ in your home country.

Random useless fact: Ponce de León was 4’11”.
