A private detective is hired to catch a serial killer who makes immigrant garment workers his victims.
The was a low-budget indie affair that few people have ever seen. The director never directed another film. The star appeared in only one other full-length film, 26 years after this one, and I assume he got that role because he was also the producer. The supporting cast included June Lockhart, Lyle Waggoner, and the guy who played Eddie Haskell on Leave it to Beaver.
So I assume it is not designated for preservation by the AFI.
Jerry Orbach had a small role. I guess his career was in a lull before Law and Order, which started the following year. Even though his role is insignificant, they placed his face on the 2005 DVD cover because he had become a familiar TV star by then.
The only memorable aspect is Maura’s only youthful nude scene, which is also her only nude scene in a film.
The bad news: (1) The scene is not available in HD; (2) After this scene, Maura waited something like a quarter of a century to do another.
The good news: Once she opened the floodgates, at around age 50, she was topless regularly in a series called The Affair.

You mean Orbach would be on Law and Order starting in 1992. Interestingly, Tierney was on the show as a guest star in 1991 when Paul Sorvino was the senior detective with Chris Noth. Orbach was also a guest star in 1991 as a defense attorney. Orbach replaced Sorvino in 92. Then all the way in 2024, Tierney would join the rebooted Law and Order as a Lieutenant.
I’d say Orbach had a fairly successful career for a character actor in the 5 or so years before Law and Order. Had a recurring character on Murder She Wrote with a short lived spinoff, played Baby’s dad in Dirty Dancing, played Martin Landau’s criminal brother in Crimes and Misdemeanors, and voiced and sang as Lumiere in Beauty and the Beast.
Anyway, Tierney was real cute here.
You mean NYPB Blue and Law and Order were two different shows? Who could have guessed?
If Orbach wasn’t in bad shape before taking this role, he must have done it as a favor. I reckon he probably only worked a day on it, Eric Roberts style.
my question who’s going through 40 year old media looking for nudes?
You aren’t?! Also some actresses who are still attractive today were working 40 years ago, and were more likely to have done nudity then than now. At least nudity that people coming might want to see.
PS – I should have said 30 years ago, because that’s about how long ago 1997 is.
He didn’t go though old media, these caps are from back then Tuna created them and he’s been long since passed away, so there’s nothing new here other than bringing up remembering the scenes and the movie…
That was almost a new film when Tuna created the captures!
That said, I have often gone through old films looking for scenes I haven’t covered, or for an upgrade in quality. To cite the late, great Billy Shakespeare, I will grant that this life “is an ill-favoured thing, sir, but mine own.”
This was Maura’s only nude scene before her mastectomy.
“A quirky beauty.”
(Which I strenuously object to. People are so unobservant when it comes to their own narrow-mindedness.)
She was Scott Foley’s straight man in NewsRadio. She did her job as visible beauty and taking things too seriously. She had talent and personality.
Her role in E.R. put her on the celestial map. Clearly, she didn’t have anything against nudity. Her career just wasn’t in a place where nudity would’ve created enough of a stir to give her the needed boost. I think The Affair was the perfect vehicle. She really gave the role such a masterful performance, and the nudity from Maura and Ruth Wilson raised the show’s profile and gave both their careers some pretty clear sailing for a run of years. Law & Order isn’t my cup of tea, but it’s a good gig. Decent show, from what I can tell. And Maura’s been a regular for going on 2 years now.
