I found the second one (right) in a 2007 edition of The Fun House. My commentary at the time said that it came from “a French magazine.” Not very helpful.
Note:
Neither one has ever appeared in a monthly edition of Playboy. I can’t say whether they ever appeared in one of the special editions.

Are we sure it’s not a frame grab from the movie?
I don’t remember seeing her bush in that film, but according to IMDB some home video versions show some segments in “open matte,” which could reveal parts of the picture we might not have seen before.
It’s nice to know that Miss Hurley was prepared for this.
The DVD special features included production stills taken by different famous photographers for each segment of Aria. There were several photos of Elizabeth nude including similar shots from the full frontal one but it was noticably absent in the old DVD I purchased. I wondered if it popped up in subsequent releases or was released by the photographer.
It was likely taken at the same time as this other shot and from roughly the same location. I definitely think it is still photography and not a frame from some alternate cut of the scene. That assumption is based on the image quality and the dust on the image. Sure, you could enlarge a still frame of film and print it, but it is less likely than it being from behind the scenes publicity photos or lighting and scenery reference photography. The still photographer on that segment of the film was Bob Carlos Clarke. If it wasn’t released with the other publicity shots than maybe it was release more recently (or leaked) from the private collection of Bob Carlos Clarke or Bruce Beresford.
Alternate Photo:
X/Twitter Photo of Bob Carlos Clarke on set:
Those stills were in the DVD including many more nude stills taken on set. There were also several nude stills of Bridget Fonda included taken by a different photographer.
Based on the scene in the film it’s probably from some unused footage between when the dude undresses her (he’s fully dressed) and the jump cut to them both nude on the bed. A lot of times those frames would wind up in Playboy’s annual Sex in Cinema feature, where due to lead times the still they published didn’t make the final cut so never appeared in the film, though I don’t know if that is where this was sourced from or maybe some film editor’s private collection swept up from the cutting room floor that got shared out.
I went through Sex in Cinema 1987, 1988 and 1989, and Playboy never mentioned it.
Playboy was good for stuff like that. They had nude shots of Sherri Jackson from “Gunn” that I don’t believe were in the film, or were from a foreign version. Victoria Principal too had nude pics in there that I never figured out the origin of, some clearly showing her bush through panties. And I recall a picture many years ago of George Benson “on the set of a film he’s making about Wes Montgomery” – a film that never came out and was never made mention of anywhere except in that one Playboy blurb. Somebody over there was getting stuff that no one else had.
The Lepus Mag also published the only known image of Sally Kellerman topless in Venus, an experimental film that played one night in one theater in L.A.
I’m going with Celebrity Sleuth. They were always prolific with this kind of thing.
I remember seeing it back in the day in Playboy. Don’t know if that is where it originated of if they were just reposting it.
I don’t think that’s right. I couldn’t find it in Playboy.
From the database, here is a list of every time she was ever mentioned in Playboy
Hurley, Elizabeth
12/95(76): Sex Stars 1995 *
1/96(135): The Year In Sex LP
1/99(184): The Year In Sex L
10/99(172): Grapevine L
12/99(149): Sex Stars 1999 L
12/00(150): Sex Stars 2000 *
3/01(16): Monster Bash! *
8/01(163): Playmate News *
8/01(169): Grapevine N
11/01(13): Fun In the Sun! *
3/02(26): Playboy After Hours *
9/02(24): Movies *
1/03(136): The Year In Sex *
7/05(161): Grapevine L
9/06(153): Grapevine N
1/07(28): DVDs N
2/09(120): Grapevine L
6/10(150): Grapevine N
N = Nipples;
B = Buttocks;
L = Legs;
P = Pubic area;
* = no nudity
In the code, P stands for pubic area, so the only time her crotch was ever exposed in Playboy was on page 135 of the January 1996 issue, and that was the famous bottomless paparazzo shot that first appeared in High Society.
A few items:
Aria is mentioned in the Nov. 1987 issue (Sex in Cinema) but no Fonda or Hurley. (I bring up Bridget Fonda for a reason since I saw pictures of her together with Hurley around the same time) I thought I remember something as well in the mag, but I don’t have access to my archives as much as I’d like or as readily available.
Also I checked my digital copies I don’t have Bruce Williamson’s writeups from that issue, so I don’t know if it was mentioned again other than the pictorial or if it appeared in another issue.
Also, looked at the Bare Facts 2001 CD edition, the author wasn’t comprehensive of what was in each magazine, so that was a dead end.
I don’t have access to my PB newsstand specials either, those aren’t documented much online, I know there were a few celeb focused issues (it’s on wikipedia)
I also know PB had issues that focused on upcoming movies, The Sailor Who Fell from Grace with the Sea, The Naked Ape, etc., dunno if they ran one for Aria or not.
I just saw the 30th anniversary edition of the movie is on Bluray (look on Amazon) It clearly says on the back that still photos of each segment from world class photographers, so I think that’s your smoking gun right there.
Sex in Cinema 1987 (no mention of any cast members):
(All mentions of Hurley in Playboy are listed above.)
I assume the Blu-Ray is the same as the DVD (gallery of photos)..
That’s what started this thread. Anghruiz went through the gallery. Tons of pics, but not this one.
That’s the same page I was referring too, I don’t think I mentioned it said their names, only that the movie was mentioned in the pictorial, if Williamson elaborated on it in the text portion (elsewhere in the magazine) I do not know as I don’t have access to the entire issue to review.
I mentioned the 30th anniversary Bluray, there was an older DVD release by Image Entertainment released in 1999, was he referring to that version?
2018 versions Found here:
There is both a 30th DVD & Bluray apparently (I assumed the DVD on Amazon was based on the older release)
Maybe it’s from the older release, I only have it on VHS, so I can’t comment on these releases
Once again … if Hurley had been mentioned in the text, it would have appeared in the database.
If there had been a full-frontal, the database would have listed it as “P,” as they did with the paparazzo shot.
Williamson obviously knew nothing about the film at the time he wrote the article. He discussed it only in the most general terms (I suppose he read a press release somewhere):
Apparently there is also a release from 2002 & 2008
(shown further down on that Alibris link in my other post)
So anything’s possible, if they included extra content not on the other home video releases.
I didn’t know this movie was that popular to have that many versions.
Looks like Lightyear did the 2008 & 2018 releases.
Image did the 2002 DVD release.
I see there’s also a German Bluray, but it looks like it ‘might’ contain the SAME bonus material as the 2018 Lightyear release (was released by Donau Film in Germany, region B in 2018) So I assume it’s the same as the Lightyear release.
Second Sight did a UK DVD, but I can’t find a release date only the film release date copyright Lightyear Films 1987
There’s an Laser Disc of it as well from Academy Entertainment
It could be from any of those or none of them at this point, I’m not sure.
That Second Sight DVD release has a documentary not included (as far as I can tell) on those other releases (per the back of the packages I can see), so maybe they had access to different stills?
With different companies and region releases, who knows who added what content to what release.
Just confirmed via another site, the SS DVD was released in 2002
Bottom line: still no idea where that picture came from.
Oh, I agree.
I’m just giving options on where it might have possibly come from, it’s for someone else to find (I’m really at the point I don’t care) it was a rabbit hole, I went down it, I came back out and I’m done now.
Just for future reference – if it had ever appeared in Playboy 1967-2010, I would have already known that because I have the database and the full electronic catalogue.
If it appeared before or after that, I could find it, but not instantly, and I would not automatically know it from an index, so I’d have to know which issue (approximately) and search manually.
I should have mentioned that in advance.
No worries.
I used what limited resources I have at my fingertips, but if I can narrow it down for you next time, I will.
A whole bunch more from Reddit:
Seems all were BtS, none of those angles are in the final version of the film, I watched the scene multiple times to make sure I didn’t overlook something.
So they seem to be cut scenes or possibly BtS photos are the only logical places they came from. (also as shown in the final pic on the reddit feed w/cameras and crew in frame)
Sadly, no one source attributed them.
So more than likely one of the home video releases, I mentioned above.
I even saw a picture the imager Boatfan did that is not from the movie and I know it’s been many years since he was actively creating collages.
Yup, We’ve seen the source of all the others before, but not the full frontal. That thing has been on my pay site for at least 20 years, but I still don’t know where it came from.
That’s the first time I’ve seen that second Liz Hurley bush shot. Thanks! Anyway, a while back we were talking about another UK nudity legend Helen Mirren doing nudity onstage in Antony and Cleopatra. I just happened to run across this profile of Helen on Oui magazine that mentioned she did a topless scene in another play, Jean Genet’s The Balcony way back in 1971.
I did some digging and I actually found topless pictures of her from the play.
Thank you so much.
There are also stills from the Antony and Cleopatra staging in 1998 but no nudes.
