Yesterday it was realizing that ol’ Crocodile Dundee is now 85 years old. Today it’s this list.
(It’s old, so all of its calculations are 8-9 years low. For example, it says that Kurt Cobain died 23 years ago. It is now 32 years.)
Some others I noticed recently:
- Jim Croce has been dead for 52 years.
- Gilligan’s Island debuted 61 years ago.
- Julianne Moore is 64 years old.
I watched an episode of Gilligan just a couple of years ago, when I was on a cruise ship that ran Gilligan frequently on one of its internal channels. I had to admit that the show, while obviously not a great work of genius, is timeless. There is nothing in it that really ages. And that episode was pretty funny. The castaways came upon some silent movie equipment and created a film labeled “Castaways Pictures Presents” to demonstrate their predicament to the world. The floated it away on a raft, and against all odds, the film was discovered. They did not get rescued, but despite the fact that the film was a bunch of poorly framed surreal scenes and unexplained blackouts that could have been improved by special 9-year-olds with a camera, it did win the Palme d’Or at the Cannes Film Festival and was declared a work of genius by the French.
It’s weird that the one cast member who hated the show is the only one left alive. Tina Louise actually thought she was to be the star of the show, and it would revolve around her. That’s what her agent had to convince her of to get her to take the role, and it worked. But when she discovered it wasn’t all about Ginger, she did nothing but bitch and whine and try to get out of her contract. And when the show ended, she was the only one who refused to participate in reunion TV movies, delusionally believing that any further association with it would ‘ruin her career’, which was effectively already dead way back in the 70’s.
And here we are decades later, with only her left to represent the show. Life is strange.
Sorry, but the Harold Hecuba musical production of Hamlet is the definition of genius.
