This is a small-budget film written and directed and by former cinema wunderkind, Luc Besson, who is now 66 years old. (How can that be?) It was shot on a smart phone, and was supposedly filmed guerilla-style, without permits, during the 2020 COVID-19 lockdowns in L.A.

Why is the former hot-shot working on minor efforts like this? Besson has fallen from grace in the industry for two reasons. First, he faced a rape accusation in 2018 from an actress who worked in Valerian and the City of a Thousand Planets. Second, Valerian (2017) and Anna (2019) lost money.

The story of John, a man who leads an ordinary life with a monotonous routine. His existence flows away dull, and he himself makes no effort to change anything; on the contrary, he does everything to continue being an ordinary man. One day John runs into a woman on the subway who is as beautiful as she is mysterious. His encounter with her finally leads him to have a goal in his bumptious life: to love June to the end of his days and at any cost.

Because one of you is bound to raise the question, I’ll note here that I think the author of that quotation misused “bumptious.” Or maybe I misunderstand what he’s trying to say.

Back to the point:

Agon is a mocumentary on the athletic preparation and painful destinies of three female athletes participating in some fictional games called “Ludoj 2024.” The athletes compete in three different disciplines: shooting, fencing, and judo, and the three separate stories seem to be unrelated. The Sofia Zobina story concerns the fictitious figure of a young shooting athlete who has already won a gold medal at the Tokyo Olympics but is now broke, and has fallen into disgrace, abandoned by her main sponsor for violating the moral rules of her discipline.

I suppose there must be some point to this film, but it is beyond my grasp. The reviewer from Vogue seemed to understand it, or at least he was able to bullshit his way through an interview with the director.

What makes the sarissa special is its length. While the Greeks used 7-9 foot spears in their phalanx, Phillip II of Macedon equipped his soldiers with pikes 13-20 feet in length depending on need and usage. As such, when he went on to conquer the Greeks, Athenians and Spartans alike could do nothing in the face of this walking wall of spiked death. Their spears were too short to reach the Macedonians.

Micro-budget horror from the USA which also has a micro running time (65 min). There are only 23 votes at IMDb, but the few people who saw it truly despised it. (2.9) That 2.9 actually seems a little high to me. In the history of film, there must have been worse efforts. I mean the odds would dictate that.

But not many.

And they aren’t much worse.

Two girls staying at an isolated house in the country are confronted with a nightmarish presence that warps their perception of reality.

On the plus side, the women are not bad lookers and they bare their breasts.
