This is a German-language biopic of Franz Kafka. It was directed by the esteemed Agnieszka Holland, an Oscar and BAFTA nominee whose career as a screenwriter and director dates back more than 50 years. Her projects have reached across much of Europe and even to North America, where she directed episodes of some of the greatest American TV shows (The Wire, House of Cards).

Actress Jenovefa Bokova plays the part of Milena Jesenská, Kafka’s translator and very infrequent lover. Although they worked together remotely for years, a time when they wrote each other almost daily, of matters both businesslike and romantic, their physical contact lasted only five days of their lifetimes. That limited duration made their time together precious and desperately passionate. Despite their fleeting physical contact, she meant so much to him that he left his diaries to her when he died.

About two decades after her time with Kafka, as a leader of the anti-Nazi resistance, she died in the Ravensbrück concentration camp. She wasn’t killed there, but died of natural causes with the end of the war in sight, an irony that seemed … well … Kafkaesque.

Season 2 focuses on Hela Zdun (Małgorzata Gorol), who returns to Poland after 15 years in exile to rebuild her family, but her daughter disappears shortly after their first meeting. Drawn into the dark world of prison connections, violence, and family secrets, Hela begins her own investigation. For her, it’s not only a fight for the truth, but also a last chance to become more than an absent mother.

New mini-series on Netflix, a mystery with secrets and twists.

Two estranged spouses — one a detective, the other a news reporter — vie to solve a murder in which each believes the other is a prime suspect.

Although the His & Hers series is set in Georgia, it is based on an eponymous book by Alice Feeney about a murder in a small British village. The book’s plot entangles two people who used to be a couple, a BBC news anchor and a detective. They both become suspects as they investigate the case, uncovering secrets and lies from their shared history.

I’m not going to watch the rest of the series for two reasons:

1. I know how the book comes out. (And I disliked it. One way to surprise readers of a mystery is to present a solution that could not possibly be true. The motive is plausible, but the details of the murder are not. So, yeah, I was surprised. And disappointed.)

2. The narrative technique is, in my opinion, too faithful to the book. The book alternates between the p.o.v. of the detective, the newswoman, and a player to be named later. That is a very effective literary technique because a reader is always aware that he is not reading an omniscient, objective point of view. When adapted too literally to film, switching constantly from her story to his and back, this technique becomes both annoying and confusing.

It’s a pulpy, juicy story, so you may enjoy it as a guilty pleasure watch. The premise is promising and the characters are interesting, but don’t say I didn’t warn you about the ending, which seems to emerge from left field, and frankly doesn’t seem possible. (I’m assuming the series ends as the book did. Since I stopped watching, that may or may not be the case.)
