French film.
Camargue, France – Nejma trains hard to win the local bull-racing competition. In bull racing, contestants enter an arena and must successfully remove one of the winning attributes from a bull’s horns, such as a tassel, to be declared the victor. It requires equal parts grace and agility, with the runners often leaping acrobatically into the rafters to escape potential injury. When Nejma is mauled after a celebration, she starts to notice disturbing changes. News of a rogue bull on the loose terrifies the community, killing young men.
The film has been described by one critic as “feminist body horror,” and he covered the film thoroughly, so he seems to know what he’s talking about. I’ll be no help. This film is too avant-garde for me. There are many films where I don’t understand the action, but in this one I don’t even understand the nudity. I can see the downblouse in the daylight scene. After that, you’re on your own.
Defoe’s film clip is here.
