I suppose the Almighty did indeed show his approval, as Mexico emerged with a 2-0 victory.
Semi-related: Iran plays today in the USA. I wonder how the crowd will react to them.

The top she is wearing – apparently a piece of official Mexican soccer team gear – seems to have been designed for the purpose of slipping to the side. You have to admire that.
Her name is Magaly Medina.
She also has an OnlyFans
Hey, get more of her at the World Cup. RATINGS WILL GO UP!!!!! That would be worth seeing since that game was shit. Not because of Mexico but because South Africa fucking sucks.
The ratings actually already are high in the United States (especially for the U.S national team)
From Variety
The Friday U.S.-Paraguay match — played at SoFi Stadium here in Inglewood, California — averaged 15,986,000 viewers across Fox, Fox One and Tubi. The audience peaked with 18.86 million viewers at 10:45 p.m. ET. It was also the most-streamed English-language USMNT match ever, with 1.13 million viewers on Tubi.
Friday’s U.S.-Paraguay faceoff also broke the Spanish-language record books on Telemundo, Peacock and Telemundo’s streaming platforms, averaging 8.9 million viewers. That makes it the most-watched USMNT World Cup match ever on Spanish-language TV. It’s also the most-watched World Cup group stage match not featuring Mexico ever on Spanish-language TV.
I read that already. Still, I think some hooters could get more asses in the seat and on the TV. 😁😁😁😁
Not a real sport. But hell, I’d even watch Fox’s rinkydink summer ‘football’ if they had knockers like this. They should try the XFL slutty cheerleader approach.
I’m not a fan, but that’s a grueling sport. The top stars are in there for the full 90 minutes with nearly continuous play for each half, often outdoors in severe heat.
Oh, yeah, and is the still world’s most-watched sport (although basketball is making a run at that lead.)
I thought it would also have the largest number of participants, but apparently it is only #3, according to this site.
The not-a-real-sport line is from Corner Gas, a fun (though Canadian) show that everyone should see. The underlying truth is that for someone raised on the Holy Quaternity of football, baseball, hockey, and hoops, only those sports matter. They tried and failed to make soccer happen in the 70s. A for effort, but money and athletic ability aside, it will be always be up there with lacrosse, water polo, and German batball as an also-ran.
I’m not really interested in an argument that devolves into bashing other sports and fans of other sports, but soccer has easily established itself along with hockey behind the big three in the United States (for a while baseball was declining, but it seems to have righted itself.)
In Canada, Outside of Toronto and maybe Montreal where baseball has a large amount of fan support, soccer is eaily the fourth sport now, ahead of baseball.
In terms of the quality of players, half the players on the U.S National Soccer team play in the top five leagues in the world (German, English, French, Spanish, Italian) and there are 7 Canadian players in these top five leagues, though only six are on the Canadian National Team.
Major League Soccer in the United States (and Canada) is one of the top drawing leagues in the world though its television numbers have lagged.
I’m sorry, but you are just wrong.
Oh, and the owners of the newest team in MLS, San Diego, paid $500 million for the expansion fee. The expectation for the likely last two expansion slots (to get to 32 teams) is that the expansion fee would be $1 billion.
So, the money is there as well.
That piece of shit football league that went out of business 3 times? Come on. Obviously, you have never seen that headbutt from Zidane back in 2006. Try running down the field back and forth for 90 minutes in the hot sun and tell me what is a real sport bitch.
Meanwhile, I will not be one of those watching. I used to watch the occasional World Cup soccer match, but I did not see any matches at all when the last World Cup was on and I will probably skip this one as well. I came to realize that I was just bored. Endless balls being kicked pointlessly across and back in efforts to maintain ‘possession’, without actually leading to scoring chances; the few exciting chances often being called back due to the ridiculously strict and misconceived ‘offside’ rule; and players constantly diving on the pitch to try to draw penalties due to the disproportionate advantage of the consequences. The epic level of corruption at FIFA, including their recent romancing of the Crook-in-Chief currently residing at the White House, also leaves a really bad taste in the mouth. Pass. Though I am happy to see clips of pretty, scantily-clad women in the stands.
Just to clarify a couple things
1.The ball is not passed pointlessly back and forth to keep possession, the idea is to probe the defence of the other teams for openings. Obviously it can get frustrating and when it’s done for long enough, the reasoning hardly matters.
2.Without the offside rule, the central defenders of both teams would just park in front of their keeper making the game even more defensive. It can also be frustrating as well and there have been suggestions to tweak the offside rule, but its purpose is actually to open up the game.
3.I agree with the disproportionate advantage, but this is one reason why the game instituted VAR and yellow cards can be given for diving and simulation. The incidence of diving have decreased since this and referees will often just tell a player to get up and the game carries on. It’s still early in the tournament, but I don’t believe a single goal has been scored from a penalty so far.
Of course, yellow cards given against diving are not new and there is the infamous case when a player who was knocked out with a concussion was given a yellow card for diving.
One more thing on the first point, I’ll see what happens as the tournament progresses, but we’re seeing a lot more goals from distance. Why pass the ball to the side to get a cross inside the goal area (6 yards out from goal) when the person with the ball somewhere between midfield and the penalty area (18 yard box) can just deliver an accurate strike and score?
I suppose this is somewhat the equivalent of a three point shot in basketball.
These goals from distance often look kind of amusing to me. It’s so hard to score, it’s so hard to score, and then a goal from distance happens and it seems so easy and it’s like, ‘why aren’t soccer scores 8-7?’
Fair points, albeit even in making them you recognized my criticisms to some degree.
Re the the soccer offside rule in particular, my view is that it should be changed to be something more akin to that in ice hockey, to create an offside line (or maybe box in the case of soccer). That would address the concerns that you expressed about not having any offside rule at all, while allowing for considerably more fast moving breakout set ups on the field, except only for those that would cross the offside line or box.
The fans can’t react any worse than our dumbfuck government. Great “deal” dumbasses
Scientists have found a strong link between watching soccer and being incredibly bored.
