French-Romanian production, called Mireasa Mortului in Romania and La Mariée du Mort in France.
In a remote village in the Carpathian mountains, an orphaned young woman, born deaf-mute, has only one friend in the village: the elderly bell ringer in the church. Feeling isolated from humans, she retreats to nature, finding peace among the wild animals that roam through the surrounding forests. In this idyllic setting, suspended in time, a French crew arrives to make a documentary film about the survival of pagan traditions and customs. The cameraman falls madly in love with the young woman, and she reciprocates, but circumstances turn weird when the documentarians want to film a funeral. Nobody in the village is dying, so the filmmakers choose to stage a funeral, dragging the superstitious villagers and the young lovers into a macabre game.
