The 4K version allows us to get a good look at what the images would look like in natural light. (Brightened, cropped, smoothed, light-adjusted.)
I don’t have enough computing power to edit 4K videos, but I can show you what the scenes would look like in natural light by creating two smaller videos. The lighting transformation requires removing too many unwanted artifacts, and eliminating the noise makes it look too artificial. They look OK, but not great. Actually, the hospital scene with the butt shot is pretty good, now that I reconsider it.

Yup. When the scenes are dark, brightening them brings up all the noise, which in turn requires smoothing. By the time you make the lighting natural, it loses too much of its definition.
I wouldn’t do that for many scenes, but this was the scene of the year and was way too dark and color-filtered, so I tried to suggest what the scene would have looked like in bright, natural light.
But to your point, yes, it’s more like impressionist painting than photorealistic art.
