The one most salient item on those lists: Emilia Perez is not only the worst nominee, but is the worst by a mile. It wins the 100-yard dash by about 50 yards. If low scores were an event in the Aztec games, the high priest would now be cutting its heart out.

And that sumbitch had 13 nominations!

(For reference, the reviews were mediocre. It is scored 70 at Metacritic. That’s OK for a summer comedy or a thriller, but mighty weak for a Best Picture nominee. Maestro, the other recent addition to the lists, is scored 77.)

This has nothing to do with nudity. Just some amazing nostalgia.

There was an educational film in the 1950s that was almost feature length. It’s called The Alphabet Conspiracy. It’s technically 54 minutes long, although three of those minutes are the closing credits.

The plot is, a young girl is frustrated with her English homework, especially with trying to figure out all the rules. Then she falls asleep, and dreams that characters from Alice in Wonderland have launched a conspiracy to get rid of English.

Dr. Frank Jackson, an English professor from USC, parleyed a local program about Shakespeare and theater craft into the role of “Dr. Research” on a series of Bell Telephone Hour science programs produced in the 1950’s, with some directed by Frank Capra. This was one of them.

All featured well-known actors of the time like Eddie Albert, Sterling Holloway and Hans Conreid. I believe that Dr. Jackson and Holloway were the inspiration for Dr. Bunsen Honeydew and Beaker on the Muppet Show.



The linguistic work of Professor Jackson has continued to this day. Although I have lived in four states (plus NYC, which is different from upstate) and five foreign countries, this quiz was able to identify my home town from my peculiar pronunciations and expressions.

Trump attacks his sworn nemesis and archenemy: the truth!

Gotta love a MAGA civil war.

As we all could have predicted from the original story (below), Trump was upset when the US Attorney’s Office, which had to tell the truth in a sworn filing to the court, placed the blame for the damaged reflecting pool on a combination of Trump’s no-bid contractor and Trump’s having rushed the repairs to clear the area in time for his UFC fight. (The filing also basically accused the Department of the Interior of deliberately misleading and stonewalling the US Attorney’s office, as cited below.)

In the process of making the filing, the US Attorney’s office uncharacteristically took a big shit on the Department of the Interior, headed by Secretary Doug Burgum. (Heckuva job, Dougie!)

DOI represented that nearly all of the damage to the Reflecting Pool was due to vandalism with only a small portion due to unidentified other causes. … DOI provided less than fulsome information at the outset of this case. The information subsequently demanded by USAO disclosed by DOI — which was not known to the prosecutors or the grand jury before the return of the indictment — strongly suggest that a rushed and botched installation by AIC, the primary contractor, led to the damage to the lining of the Reflecting Pool. … Atlantic Industrial Coatings (“AIC”) was selected as the sole-source contractor for installation of the Reflecting Pool lining. … It was not until USAO-DC repeatedly reached out to DOI dozens and dozens of times that DOI slowly started trickling information to USAO-DC. Had DOI been forthcoming with the information clearly in its possession, the government would not have sought a grand jury indictment.

As you can see from the verbiage above, the filing also took a subtle shot at Trump’s decision to award a no-bid contract. In another part of the filing, it took a not-so-subtle shot at the pressure on the contractor to rush the job before Trump’s silly UFC fight. The line prosecutor didn’t use the phrase “silly UFC fight,” but if court documents can have subtext, the implication was somewhere between “Trump’s silly UFC fight” and “Trump’s fucking UFC fight.”

On June 9, a final inspection was completed, and crews then cleaned the site and removed the equipment, in time for the UFC fight scheduled to occur on the White House grounds on June 14, 2026. But only two days later, on June 11, 2026, an NPS engineer was alerted to peeling of the Reflecting Pool lining. … It was not until after the return of the indictment, that the DOI provided additional documents to the USAO-DC indicating that damage to the Lincoln Memorial Reflecting Pool in June 2026 was the result of flawed installation by the contractor, Atlantic Industrial Coatings (“AIC”), and the rush to complete the project prior to events associated with the America 250 celebration in the weeks surrounding Independence Day 2026. … The rush to complete the project led to hasty and botched work that was not remediated before the project was finished and the fencing removed.

Visitors from Mexico and Canada are excluded, so I guessed that the bottom three would be North Dakota, Nebraska and Delaware. I never heard of anyone going to those places on purpose. In fact, the “Welcome to Delaware” sign has a sub-heading that asks, “Is your GPS broken?”

(North Dakota would not be on the list if Canadian visitors were included. It’s a border state, and booze is much cheaper than in Canuckistan.)

I was right in general. Those were three of the bottom four, but the real list says the other non-destination is West Virginia, which tied for the bottom spot with North Dakota. I guess I forgot about WV. Based on the estimate of ZERO foreign visitors, rounded to the nearest thousand, I guess I’m not the only one who forgot it.

You can probably guess that NY, California and Florida are high. Nevada is fourth, which is not a surprising fact, but stands as an awe-inspiring tribute to the ability of mankind to alter its reality. If we had done this same survey in 1926 instead of 2026, Nevada might have competed with North Dakota and West Virginia to be the least-popular destination for overseas visitors. Somehow, thanks to the creation of Lake Meade and one gangster’s dream of a legal gambling oasis in the desert, Nevada has gone from the bottom of the popularity chart to the top.

What happens to Mitch McConnell’s senate seat?

Three possibilities:

If Mitch keeps the seat, the GOP will be missing a vote until (and if) he can return. This could affect, for example, confirmation hearings.

If Mitch dies or resigns more than 56 days before his term expires, the governor must call a special election to select a temporary replacement to serve out the remainder of the term. A Republican victory would be overwhelmingly likely,

If Mitch dies or resigns 56 days or less before his term expires, there is insufficient time to legally set up a special election. In this scenario, the seat would remains vacant until the winner of the November election is sworn in.

Kentucky is one of five states where the governor cannot name a replacement.

A fourth possibility: Democrats take the 2024 succession law to court and win.

In case a court voided the 2024 law in its entirety and treated the 2021 statute as controlling, Governor Andy Beshear would regain a tightly limited appointment power, but in no case could a Democrat get the seat.

Because McConnell is a Republican, the Kentucky Republican Party’s state executive committee would submit three names. Beshear would be required to appoint one of those three. The appointee must have been continuously registered as a Republican since December 31 of the preceding year. Beshear would have 21 days after the party submits its list to make the appointment. The statute does not clearly impose a deadline on the party committee for submitting the list.

If Mitch can’t return to work:

For Republicans, the best scenario is for McConnell to resign now, with the effect that, assuming the same candidates run in the special election as in the main one, the GOP would be able to replace McConnell in November rather than January.

For Democrats, the best scenario is Zombie Mitch – for McConnell to remain alive without resigning, but unable to cast his votes. This could cost the GOP a vote in some crucial upcoming votes.

The actual text of the 14th Amendment:

All persons born or naturalized in the United States, and subject to the jurisdiction thereof, are citizens of the United States and of the State wherein they reside.

The controversial part is underlined.

By the reckoning I use, they upheld it by a 3-1 decision. I say that because there are five justices whose votes I can predict 100% of the time, even though I know nothing about constitutional law. As soon as I know what the issue is, I know how Thomas, Alito, Jackson, Sotomayor and Kagan will vote. I don’t know need to know what the legal issues are because I know they will find some legal pretext to vote they way they want to. In this case the four remaining justices split 3-1, with Gorsuch dissenting.

I know that the legal reasoning of Alito and Thomas will be sophistry, so let’s see what Gorsuch had to say:

“At the heart of today’s dispute lie two competing views of the Fourteenth Amendment’s Citizenship Clause. On one account, the Clause incorporated the English common law rule of jus soli (literally, the ‘right of the soil’),” he noted. The other account, he said, “adopted a distinctly American settler’s view of citizenship … that promises the full ‘dignity and glory of American citizenship’ to any child born in this country to parents who have made this Nation their permanent home **, regardless of their race, religion, or national origin.”

(Gorsuch went on to agree with the latter interpretation. The majority obviously did not.)

I know that the legal reasoning of Kagan, Sotomayor and Jackson will be sophistry, and Kavanaugh sided with the majority for a completely separate reason, so let’s see what Roberts and Barrett had to say:

Roberts wrote:

“The Court exhaustively canvassed the text and history of the Citizenship Clause and at no point identified any evidence that the ratifiers thought themselves to be imposing a domicile limitation.”

Amy Coney Barrett did not write a separate opinion, so we presume she agreed with Roberts’ reasoning. I don’t know the history he’s citing, but assuming he is correct, that sounds like a reasonable position to me.

Kavanaugh flew solo, and went in his own direction. He opined that birthright citizenship could be further* limited, but not in this case. It would require an act of Congress, not the simple declaration of one man (Trump in this case). Even if such a law were passed, the other five in the majority would presumably deem it unconstitutional.

I think I actually agree with that position. It doesn’t seem to me that the USA border is like the touchdown line in football. A pregnant woman crossing the line on “vacation” shouldn’t score the TD. But that’s just my opinion, not a legal position.

Mystery solved: Why DID the reflecting pool turn green?

I don’t care about the reflecting pool nonsense, but this is some good reporting. These reporters cut through all the bullshit explanations and found the actual scientific cause.

Along the perimeter of the Lincoln Memorial Reflecting Pool, devices called nanobubblers have been used to combat algae blooms. But officials removed them on June 12. By the next day, the water had turned from blue to green with algae before officials re-installed the nanobubblers.

The first millionaire and multi-millionaire was John Jacob Astor.

Here is a question where I was too lazy to do all the research and math, so I asked ChatGPT.

In the history of America since the country was founded, who has been the richest American … as a percentage of the country’s economy? (I think Anderson Cooper’s book suggested it was John Jacob Astor, but I have not verified that in any way.)

By pure CPI calculation, Rockefeller’s fortune only amounts to $30 billion in today’s dollars, but that is deceptive. CPI inflation does not grow nearly as fast as the overall economy, stock market, population, or national wealth. It’s pretty obvious that Rockefeller, with wealth at 1.5% of GDP, was far wealthier than a man with $30 billion today. To illustrate the point, consider the logical extension ad absurdum. (2) If you use the gold standard, Rockefeller had enough wealth to buy 43.5 million ounces of gold. That would be worth some $180 billion today. So he was still nowhere near Musk’s league. Musk would be about six times as rich as Rockefeller by that measurement.

(3) Another interesting measurement is the ratio of the wealthiest man to the nearest contender, Musk is now 3.6 times as wealthy as Larry Page, who is in second place. As far as I can tell, none of the historical tycoons ever reached that ratio between them and their nearest rival. Astor made it to 3x. Bill Gates made it to 2.5x at one point. Rockefeller and Vanderbilt were approximately 2x.

No matter how you shake it out, Elon is now the top dog. Elon is not just rich because of inflated dollars. He is the richest American in history. He is at least twice as rich as John D. Rockefeller or JJ Astor ever were. To use an old-fashioned term, he is the ultimate tycoon.

Most people thought that Patel would be the next major administration figure out the door. I don’t think the markets were counting on Gabbard leaving for a completely legitimate personal reason. Patel is still considered the most likely to be gone by year’s end.

Some news reports say that her stated reason is a pretext, that she wanted out because of her opposition to the Iran attacks, and that Trump wanted her gone for the same reason.

AI is evil, part ∞

Earlier today, Dr. Gumby brought to my attention that Johnny Moronic had covered a seldom-seen alternate cut of Alien Visitor (1996) that included quite a bit of extra nudity from Ullie Birve.

Here is an example of a brief but excellent scene. (Apparently only available in DVD quality.) In the cut seen more often, her lower body appears only momentarily in this scene, too briefly to see without the pause button. But you get a lingering look in this version. While the real clip is not the topic at hand here, we can’t fail to note that Ullie had a great figure. You have to love the way her large natural breasts bounce.

Anyway … I thought to ask AI for something way beyond my video editing capability – “Imagine this scene in daylight, with natural skin tones.” Here is the result. I have to stress here that this scene never existed. It is a complete fake, a product of pure AI invention, loosely based on the real scene above.

But it’s just about perfect. The only real flaw in it is that the guy, Syd Brisbane, speaks with an American accent. He’s really an Aussie, as you might guess from the unlikely name of Sydney Brisbane. The accent could have been fixed if I had given the proper instructions, but I had no idea the fuckin’ AI thing was going to invent dialogue.

I was skeptical of you prophets of AI doom, but you Cassandras are absolutely right. Your paranoia is not paranoia at all. It is merely a recognition of reality. In a year or two, we will have no idea whether an actress got naked. We won’t even know whether she was really in the movie with the other actors, or was just strolling around her back yard for images to be altered later and inserted into the movie’s context. Shit, I might put myself in Casablanca in place of Bogie!

Scary shit.
