She is normally known as a character actress, and she’s great at it. You may remember her memorably quirky performance as the homicidal nurse in Fargo.

She glammed up a bit for this role, and looked good. Unfortunately, her nude scene is dark and out of focus.

She did expose a nipple for a split-second in Romeo and Juliet, which came out almost unnoticed earlier in 2021. It is available for purchase at Amazon, but there are NO reviews at Rotten Tomatoes, and only three minor critics are linked from IMDb.

I can see why it didn’t get much of a fanfare. I love Shakespeare and I hated this film.

I guess out-of-focus nudity is her specialty. Her only pre-2021 nudity, in Beast (2017), was even hazier than the clips from The Lost Daughter.

When I made my trip to Russia in 2013, I wrote a novel. Yes, that was a very stupid way to pass my time when I had traveled to St. Petersburg with a beautiful young woman, but I had to deal with a severe moral crisis, and I did it in the way I know how.

My indecision about that relationship led me to examine the first 23 years of my life, and I suppose I learned a lot about why and how I trapped myself in a terrible situation. I had an unusual life between ages 3 and 23, I would say it was completely unique (as far as I know), and I suppose all of that may explain why I am always so timid about so many things. My mom and dad are gone, and I have never shared the details of my early childhood with anyone, not my best friends, not my ex-wives, not my children, so before I wrote this novella, none of the incidents existed except in my memory. Now at least they are on the record.

I will not claim to be James Joyce, but I can spin a yarn purty fair, and I have some pretty good ones to spin. I finished the work off in this week of illness by adding an epilogue.

There’s no Uncle Scoopy material except for my customary tip o’ the hat to Romy Schneider, so don’t expect any discussions of sex and nudity. It’s really kind of a sad story. There are also some laughs and there was a lot of fun in my life, but I always ended up getting humiliated in some way – physically, sexually, financially. After a few anecdotes, you’ll get the idea that they never seem to have a happy ending. I was like the Moll Flanders of Howdy Doody fans.

Anyway, those of you who basically know me because we’ve been sharing these blogs for decades may be interested to see what I was like in my years growing up in Catholic schools, which I never wanted to go to and my parents never wanted to send me to. I think you can guess that I have few kind words for the Catholic Church or its representatives.

Just in passing, I checked my stats and the nude post that got the most hits this year was Emma Watson at the beach. That one was obvious. It was the year’s biggest sensation. After that came some surprises. #2 was Emma Thompson in that Leo Grande thingy. #3 was Kelly Reilly.

Here are the results of the qualifying round, which determined which of the nominees would appear on the final ballot, and how they would be seeded. Fifty six actresses moved to the final round based on having received at least one first-place vote, and four others were advanced based on a good overall score. In that round, Emma Corrin had the most first-place votes and Sydney Sweeney had the best overall score. Some of the scenes that did fairly well in the qualifying round (like Aubrey Plaza in The White Lotus), dropped far down the leader board because there was no case to make for them as the very best scene of the year.

If you follow this page and others dedicated to film nudity, you have certainly seen some lovely captures of Charlize Theron’s butt in The Cider House Rules.

But what you may not realize (unless you are a member at the Fun House) is that there was an earlier version of this scene which included lengthy topless exposure. To my knowledge, this variation has never appeared as “deleted footage” or “alternate footage” on any DVD or Blu-Ray. It is one of the rarest items in my collection. The quality is not good.

My collages appeared in the Fun House on the page from March 27, 2000, and a single frame (from somebody else, I think) appeared on March 12.

The well-known film critic, James Berardinelli, wrote:

“The topless version of the Cider House Rules scene was in the version that was shown at the Toronto Film Festival in September 1999. It was subsequently re-edited to achieve a PG-13 rating for its theatrical release. To my knowledge, there was only a single print struck with the full scene so, somehow, you have footage from it. It was likely made internally at the studio or at the festival. It likely no longer exists except possibly in a private collection.”

Somebody must have made a bootleg cam recording at the Toronto screening, and I somehow stumbled over it, probably on an IRC channel, way back in the year 2000.

Sally Kellerman passed away about a week ago and I missed it.

The Variety writers did their usual very thorough job when doing a show-biz obituary, and we all know about her beautiful and sexy speaking voice, so let’s discuss things nobody knows about her.

In 1971, when she was already an established star from her work in M*A*S*H, she and her then-partner collaborated on an experimental film called Venus, which was apparently such a dud that it screened in only a few arthouse theaters, including only one theater in LA for one night. Fortunately, the LA Times had a hard-working critic named Kevin Thomas who made a point of going there that night to review it. There was no internet or cable TV in that era, and the film was too trippy for broadcast TV to be interested, so it disappeared into film oblivion. To my knowledge, there is no extant copy. We would not know about it at all, if not for three things: (1) the LA Times reviewed it, as mentioned; (2) Kellerman mentioned it several times in her autobiography because there was footage that she was not expecting (she had not known the camera was rolling); (3) Playboy included a single frame from it in one of those “Sex Stars of 19XX” recaps.

While we are on the subject of her most obscure performances, I can name two more from her pre-M*A*S*H days:

She was one of the Many Loves of Dobie Gillis in the early 60s. (Fully dressed, of course.)

And she took a bath on screen (nothing showing) in an utterly obscure Canadian series called Seaway, which ran for only a single season in 1965, and has attracted a whopping 47 votes at IMDb. This would normally be lost to the ages alongside Venus, except for the legendary internet encyclopedist named OZ, who has been chronicling the antics of sexy celebrities for more than 20 years, eventually covering just about anything and everything you can think of, even Sally’s performance in Seaway!

Well, of course she also did some nudity in real movies:

That’s right, she was still whippin’ em’ out at age 67 – and she looked pretty good!

“First Playmate” is a trivia question that will win you many bar bets. Most people think it was Marilyn Monroe. You can also win bets on the first centerfold, also not Marilyn. You all know that Marilyn appeared in Playboy #1 in December of 1953, but the magazine never applied the term “Playmate” to her (MM was the “Sweetheart of the Month”), and she was not a centerfold, having appeared on pages 17-19. The main color picture was presented vertically, as shown in the link above.

• An obscure model/actress named Margie Harrison became the first “Playmate” when she was so called in the second-ever issue of the Bunny-oriented publication. Margie also became the first woman chosen as a Playmate twice, when the magazine pictured her again a few months later in the June, 1954 edition. Unfortunately for her, the picture was not identified as Margie at the time. It was not until two years after her appearance in Playboy #2 that Playboy’s readers learned her identity.

• The first actual centerfold (two-page) was Janet Pilgrim (Miss July for 1955)

• The model for the first three-panel fold-out centerfold was Marian Stafford, Miss March for 1956.

The second issue was somewhat more professional in appearance, but was still rudimentary, and was still predominantly black-and-white.
