I just listened to “Speedy Gonzales” for some reason (probably ADD). How did we not know how demeaning that was to Mexican people? But then again, we also loved those Warner Brothers cartoons, Bill Dana as Jose Jimenez, and those ubiquitous billboards for the South of the Border motel. I guess we were just really into racism. Good times! No wonder people want to “Make America Great Again.”
There was a local oldies station that had an hour long request show. I would call in and ask for “Speedy Gonzales”, Bill Dana’s “José Jiménez”, “Ahab the Arab”, and “Please, Mr. Custer”. They always seemed to run out of time before getting to any of them.
Nice dress, considering it’s see-through. She apparently has some nudes as well. Can’t say I’ve heard of her before.
Seems like every old pop song with a Mexican theme was at least a little bit racist. (Peggy Lee’s “Manana (Is Good Enough for Me),” foe example) And don’t forget the Frito Bandito.
