I can imagine the terror of the people who chose to jump rather than be killed by the fire. To make that worse, at least 18 people were killed on the ground when they were hit by falling people and/or other debris. One of those was Father Mychal Judge, the NY Fire Department chaplain. Father Judge was particularly close to my then-girlfriend’s family, several of whom were firemen. Her family all survived, but one of her uncles was standing next to Father Judge less than a minute before he was killed. I wonder how many people that jumped would have been able to resist jumping if they realized they were endangering people on the ground. Maybe there were people that resisted, and maybe there were jumpers that realized. As I understand it, there was an effort to canonize Father Judge. Some believe that effort failed because of rumors that Father Judge was gay.
