There are many facts in there that I was not aware of. (Of course they may or may not be accurate.)
I don’t know whether Julia Child could kill you with her bare hands, but the stories about her being in the CIA (originally called OSS) are true. For a while, she worked directly for the legendary Wild Bill Donovan.
From Christopher Lee’s obituary in the Economist: “He himself did gallant war service, won medals and was mentioned in dispatches; but much of his work, in special forces, was so secret that he could not talk about it. This added to his air of mystery, as well as to the implacability with which he approached the business of murdering people on screen. He had seen so many people killed, he said—beginning with the last public guillotining in France, observed when he was 17—that he had acquired a shell every bit as hard as those of his villains. Guns, knives and swords were handled with a tenderness that approached love. He knew, he told one director, just what sound people made when they were stabbed in the back: a soft groan, as blood seeped into their lungs. He had seen it done.”
Wow, I wonder if Mister Rogers knew he was taking his life into his hands when he boxed with Julia Child in Battle of the PBS Stars which for some reason aired only on the Canadian television network SCTV.
He must have known he was in trouble. Why else would he have enlisted the aid of King Friday XIII.
You can joke about it, but that as a dark day in Mr Roger’s neighborhood.
Christopher Lee told a lot of stories about himself and his wartime exploits. The reality is that he was a common or garden intelligence officer in the Royal Air Force, not a spy or a commando of any sort. Likewise Julia Child: she did work for the OSS but in an administrative rather than an operational role.
