Do senior members of the U.S. Administration not understand the immense corrosive effect of the current Trump initiative regarding Greenland on the United States’ relationship with other countries? Or do they understand and simply don’t care? I am thinking that it is the latter. DGAF has always been a strong strain in American sentiments. It tended to be expressed as “Looking out for #1” but no matter. My point is, many Americans cheered on people who openly adhered to it. But there’s always been a large group of us who felt respectability was important, and that being considerate of the rest of us was a main ingredient in the respectability recipe. Nowadays, there is an epidemic of the belief that there’s neither content nor meaning in the whole concept of respectability. Much of the world takes cues from America, so this attitude spreads like wildfire in the bastions of so-called civilized conduct. In short, it is not “domestic policy malevolence”, not “those currently in charge”, not Trump, not the Administration, but the U.S. corroding, as you say, from the inside out, and casting its dark cloud over the entire globe. I hope this is an answer you were looking for. Those of us clinging to our habitual expectations are inhaling too much copium.

We need somebody with the guts to sack up and do what is right, unafraid of how people who have never held such authority will whine and snivel. We need a Teddy Roosevelt or a Harry Truman. Instead we have vice-presidents who wear eyeliner.

Annexing Greenland with a declaration of ‘Trump Golden Dome’ the day after at a podium over there with a ceremony and a trinket medal is right up his alley. Not only is Greenland protected by NATO, but under the existing treaties, Trump can build as many bases as he wants there if he feels the existing defense structure is inadequate.
Obviously, there is more to it, and Trump is using defense/security as a pretext.The most likely explanation is that Greenland has deposits of rare earths that the US needs, and currently has to obtain from China.
Another possibility is that he is deliberately sabotaging NATO.
\The solution is probably tied up somehow in Trump’s personal gain. If you figure out what HE has to gain (as opposed to what the USA has to gain), you will find the real reason. Best guess: Lauder agreed to cut Trump in on mining projects in Greenland.
