Female frequenters of a steam room decide to fight its closure.
In his prime, Joseph Losey directed some fine films like The Go-Between, The Servant and King and Country. It’s a shame that his last film had to be this one. It’s a stage play that was not at all “opened up” by its journey to the screen. It’s still essentially a bunch of people in a single set speaking artificial stage dialogue. If the women kept their towels on, this would be an utterly unwatchable film.
But they don’t, so …

This film was named in a lawsuit by Vanessa Redgrave against the Boston Symphony Orchestra after they fired her for supporting the PLO. She testified that she was basically forced to do the nude scene because she couldn’t find work and the role required it. Her fee was 100,000 dollars. She did do a nude scene onstage in Orpheus Descending but only when she felt like it. She probably didn’t feel like it but the 100,000 dollars wqs hard to pass up. Vanessa doesn’t really have much in the chest department but her ass is exquisite and she probablyknows it since most of her nude scenes were shot from behind.
She did a few nude scenes in her career. MrSkin lists 8 of them.
I counted eight also:
Orpheus Descending (1990)
Steaming (1985)
Yanks (1979)
Agatha (1979)
Out of Season (1975)
Isadora (1968)
A Quiet Place in the Country (1968)
Blow-Up (1966)
I think the deal with Steaming is that she was 48 and looked older, so she really wasn’t looking to do more nude scenes at that point in her career.
Then again, she did it again some years later.
I do remember her nice bum in Agatha, sauna scene
Sarah Miles had a good run of nudity too, Playboy layout with Kristofferson!
