And yet, somehow, against all odds, the Olympiad has managed to endure, even prosper, without Rob Schneider’s endorsement.
I can’t base my opinion on just one star from 1990. I need a consensus, and I’m withholding judgment until I hear from Vanilla Ice.
How is this a news story? I don’t even care what important people think about the Olympics, but Schneider? I didn’t even know he was still alive.
To be fair to the guy, I can understand his confusion because Scooby’s Laff-a-Lympics did celebrate Satan. Plus it was fixed. I dropped a bundle betting on the Dastardlies.
And then I was summarily humbled by ABC when they rejected my idea for a time-travel spin-off, Scooby’s Aztec Games, where they would cut out the winner’s heart after every competition.
Shaggy: Zoinks, ya did it, Scoob. Ya won the long jump.
Scooby (seeing the high priest approach with a ceremonial knife): Ruh-roh!
—————
As for Rob, I know he has impeccable taste and would never stoop to anything so tawdry as a drag parody.

The only reason I know Schneider’s still alive is because he regularly makes it into Youtube videos such as, “Top 20 Worst Actors Ever” and “Actors Who Ruined Their Careers”, etc. He’s always in there with Seagal, Michael Richards, Tila Tequila, et al. Occasionally he makes the news for saying something obnoxiously stupid, or saying he’s boycotting something, basically because Trump told him to. He’s as relevant as Lance Armstrong or Scott Baio.
Apologies to Armstrong/Baio …
This guy is so plugged to the Christian nationalist echo chamber he forgot he was Jewish. Jews don’t even believe in Satan
I thought there was a case in the Tanakh where שָׂטָן was used as a proper name. Book of Job, maybe?
Anyway, God has quite a duel with some supernatural adversary in Job. Is that not Satan?
Sorry, not Job.
1 Chronicles 21:1
To be fair, that particular scene from the opening ceremonies was pretty far out there even for persons with religious sensibilities that are well removed from those the U.S. extreme right. The French Olympic Committee recognized that after the fact, apologized, and indicated that they meant no disrespect, which is fine. Of course that does not prevent Rob Schneider from making a dick of himself, as usual.
You know, when I first heard of this “controversy” and saw the pictures, at first I thought “well, it’s similar… but not really mocking the Last Supper… right?” Then I saw the explanations about how it was supposed to be about the Greek god Dionysus or something, and that all the people complaining were ignorant and uneducated Christians or Republicans.
I call bullshit.
Whoever set this up knew exactly what they were doing. They knew some people would be offended and deliberately pushed the button. They have enough “evidence” to claim that they meant no insult, but I think they knew it would draw a response, and did it anyway. Much like how someone might say “I’m gonna go smoke a fag” and then claim that it’s slang for a cigarette in the U.K. (at which time none of us were British, and we were nearly on the opposite side of the planet from Great Britain); he knew damn well he was triggering the gay men that were near us on the next table.
Agree.
Anyone who claims that they did not mean to represent the Last Supper is clearly being disingenuous. I have flipped their image horizontally. Now look at the arms of the character to the right of Jesus. Look at the next character, clad in red and yellow. Look at the position of the two apostles to the far right, one clean-shaven, then one bearded. In both versions, those two are the only characters facing away from the center.
The only real variation in the tableau comes from that character in yellow with his or her elbows on the table, replacing the character generally identified as Thomas (pointing upward, partially hidden in the da Vinci version).
I’m not sure how that last bit fits in, but apart from that it is a grotesque of the da Vinci.
Plus, the performers fully admitted that they were imitating The Last Supper. The organizers did as well.
It was based on this painting of Greek Gods. Maybe this painting was influenced by the Last Supper. One way to tell is that there were more than 13 people in the French performance.
Two other things:
1.This must be the millionth recent example of right wing cancel culture.
2.The pseudo religious right does not own Christianity. They have no right to say what is and isn’t allowed. If they want to be OUTRAGED! fine, but in America, the vast majority of them are supporting a psychopath, a grifter, a traitor and a rapist for President.
Not only should they go fuck themselves, but the positive thing is their obvious phoniness is so obvious to so many especially younger people that many young people want nothing to do with their pseudo religion.
I think you missed the links where both the actors and the producers admitted that they were mimicking the Last Supper (which was then interrupted by Dionysus).
Sorry, “art experts,” but you are full of pretentious bullshit.
But that’s not a revelation, is it? I can’t name an instance when so called art experts were NOT full of pretentious bullshit.
Except the link on the actors anyway is from a traditional Catholic website and does not actually quote any of the actors. The closest is citing a tweet that was subsequently deleted. How convenient.
Read the article again and you’ll see that not a single actor is quoted mentioning either the Last Supper or Leonardo Da Vinci.
Right wing pseudo Christians are among the biggest liars on the planet.
Wow, Talk about disingenuous!
Butch posted a screenshot image of her performance in the Last Supper parody above an image of Da Vinci’s original painting to her Instagram account with the comment, “Oh yes! Oh yes! The new gay testament!” Yes, Butch didn’t specifically mention Da Vinci or the Last Supper by name – but he or she posted the two pics together.
Here is the post:
Same thing with Piche. While he did not use those specific words, he is obviously referring to the Last Supper when he says , “it’s a biblical representation that has been reused in pop culture for decades and it’s never really been a problem.”
And you can find quotes from the other performers elsewhere. Hugo Bardin, whose drag queen character Paloma also took part in the tableau, told Reuters they were disappointed Paris 2024 had felt compelled to apologize. “What bothers people isn’t that we’re reproducing this painting,” Bardin said, “what bothers people is that queer people are reproducing it.”
And again, the e-mail statement to the press read, “Thomas Jolly took inspiration from Leonardo da Vinci’s famous painting to create the setting. He is not the first artist to make a reference to what is a world-famous work of art. From Andy Warhol to ‘The Simpsons,’ many have done it before him.”
I agree that art experts are pretentious bullshitters (as was wonderfully done up in a Columbo episode) but even art experts can tell when one painting influenced another, which is extremely common in art, and was almost certainly the case with this Dionysus painting being influenced by The Last Supper.
It’s clear that the Dionysus painting was influenced by The Last Supper, but that’s not the point. The point is that the tableau created for the Olympics was directly intended to mimic the Last Supper – which was crashed by Dionysus.
What’s on the table for debate is whether the tableau was appropriate, funny, disprespectful, an exercise of free speech, a representation of French inclusivity, etc.
But the fact that the tableau was a grotesque of The Last Supper, (as crashed by Dionysus) is simply a fact. The actors practiced the correct poses, as is evident in the comparison I posted, and the producers admitted their intent – as also reported by the Washington Post.
Interestingly enough (to me anyway) there is a French mockumentary from 2002 called Dark Side of the Moon that takes quotes out of context from important American political and NASA figures of the 1960s to show them all admitting the moon landing was fake with the (fake) missing details in the quotes added in by the narrator.
I certainly don’t think this is above what a Traditional Catholic website would engage in. The attitude of these pseudo religious people is ‘I can do whatever I want since I have God on my side.’
The performers and the spokesperson admitted they started the tableau by doing The Last Supper, and it’s obvious they did just that. (See the photo comparison I posted somewhere in this thread.) They did sort of try to disguise it by flipping the apostles horizontally, but it’s still completely obvious.
That discussion is not really on the table. It’s just a fact.
What we should be discussing is – so what?
You basically have a choice of three positions: (1) mockery and parody of religion is off the table; (2) religion is a collection of ideas, and subject to ridicule, parody and mockery like any other ideas because such free speech is the very cornerstone of all human freedom; (3) religion is harmful to mankind, and therefore, the more mockery the better.
I would qualify that by stating the obvious: that any mockery has to read the room. There is a time and a place to make fun of religion. In the National Lampoon – 100% yes. In an episode of Lassie – 100% no. In the Olympics opening ceremony – I dunno. If I had been producing the show, I would have axed it, but there’s plenty of room for other opinions.
I disagree, even in the part you show, there are significant differences with the The Last Supper.
Of course, the only thing that really interests me is this being the seemingly 1 millionth example of right wing cancel culture and that pseudo religious Christians think they get to decide for everybody, not only what can and can’t be shown, but that they get to speak for all Christianity. Like I said, fuck them.
OK, the quotes from that Catholic article are real. I apologize for that. However, Thomas Jolly disputes what the producers said was the inspiration.
He disputed it after he got in trouble. (That was obviously a lie. “Butch” and the other actors didn’t decide Last Supper on their own.)
“Butch” also changed his or her position after they got in trouble, by deleting the Last Supper post and replacing it with some generic nonsense about “the feast of the gods.”
Obviously there was a point after the attacks when they decided to circle the wagons.
So you had to alter the photo and ignore every other photo in order to make your case, including the photo showing the guy portraying Dionysus at this drag interpretation of the Dionysia. Thanks for demoinstrating the complete dishonesty of the modern Christian persecution complex.
1) I think you missed the part where both the actors and the producers admitted they were mimicking the Last Supper
2) I don’t believe in any gods – except Truth.
It’s funny how liberals and lgbt community keep attacking and insulting christians but at the same time they are afraid to attack judaism or muslims. Why are you afraid? It is easy to attack weak and defenseless christians. Start insulting strong and very vengeful muslims. What are you afraid of, posers?
I personally make it a practice to insult only the Amish, and even then only in formats that require electricity to access.
Once in a while, if I’m feeling courageous, I’ll take a soft swipe at a Buddhist.
By the way – weak and defenseless Christians? You should see them in America. They are better armed than the Wehrmacht, and they are ripe to smite their enemies, Old Testament style – and they see an Amalekite under every rock.
All the liberals and lgbt people I know don’t care for conservative christians, muslims or jews. Maybe its the bigotry and hypocrisy about taking of the poor.
Of course you can do what we do here in Canada where the biggest Evangelical Christian church ordains lgbt ministers and is pretty cozy with the biggest left wing political party. The greatest Canadian, Tommy Douglas, was a Democratic Socialist, started public healthcare in Canada and was a Baptist Minister doing his Christian duty.
Ahem! SECOND-greatest …
Muslims aren’t imposing their views on me through the government.
Depends on which government is yours.
All these people can worship whatever they want and I’m fine with it because I don’t care. It is pretty hilarious though that most of these performers in the Olympics would be beheaded in many Muslim nations, but they aren’t allowed to criticize them. If real satire still existed, people would have a field day.
And there’s already a meme with shots of him…in drag.
Not to mention Rob Schneider was in that uproarious [sic] Adam Sandler comedy about Satan and his kids. Fuck Rob Schneider, just another MAGA loser on the grift.
He’s a flat-earther and vaccine denier, isn’t he? Wears a tinfoil hat 24/7, like Aaron Rodgers. Dumber than a box of JD Vances.
Well, it’s the Olympics and it’s France. Was it ever NOT going to be controversial? I’m just a little surprised the controversy was religious instead of political.
If you’re pissed at the ceremony, fine (except that you may be Rob Schneider). But if you’re one of these turdburglars who’ve run crying to the FCC that NBC shouldn’t have broadcast it, go die. Good, bad, or indifferent, the network isn’t going to censor it – they’d get in ten times as much trouble.
Oh man, look at these comments. Who cares what this guy says? You all do. You’re all so full of hate and vitriol. My favorite so far is ‘go die’. The party of peace and tolerance, huh?
Insert rolling eye emoji here..
I’d say trolling a cretin like Rob Schneider, whose big claim to fame is “Deuce Bigalow, Male Gigolo”, on a nudie site comment section, is a lot less hateful than insanely screaming that all Dems are dangerous “childless cat ladies”, and campaigning that you’re going to be a “dictator” and “you will never have to vote again if you vote for me”, and inciting an insurrection in which people died, etc.
Pull your head out of your ass, wipe off all the fecal matter and dingleberries, and then you can see what normal people see — which is that cults are bad for America, particularly cults led by 78-year-old deranged losers who preach that drinking bleach will cure covid. At the polls, people will prefer a black woman who hasn’t done much over a raving psycho like that. Unless they’re Rob Schneider, who undoubtedly has bleach-drinking parties with such relevant luminaries as Roseanne, Hulk Hogan, Stephen Baldwin, and of course, that Mensa genius and Rhodes scholar, Kid Rock.
Your post makes my point, and I thank you for that. Hope things go your way at election time because you don’t strike me as someone that could handle it if it doesn’t. Good luck!
We just want you, Mike Kensa, to die. So, please. FOAD!
(sorry/notsorry).
Seems reasonable.
hmm, your side ?!? not sure what Kensa’s side is, but Trump’s side thru a hissy fit on Jan 6, 2021, after losing the election, storming the capital. Indeed, Trump’s insurrection ie directing his fascist sheep to do his bidding was quite the spectacle, eh. You’ll probably be able to relive the insurrection by watching campaign commercials Sept/Oct. 😮
btw, iirc 5/6 people died directly as a result of Trump’s “hissy fit!”
Have a lovely day! Yielding back the balance of my time.
Mike? Dev J’s post makes your point only if your point is that you willingly believe enough lies – many of them VERY stupid – to be a Trump supporter. And are therefore, at least in the short run, someone the world would be better off without. You know, like a Nazi in Germany during or before WWII, or a bigtime Confederacy supporter before Appomattox. That’s who you are now, and it’s a weird thing to be in 2024.
…Baldwin, Rock, don’t forget Scott Adams. Or better yet, DO forget Adams – let’s see if he’ll pop up and threaten to hypnotize us all.

Yes Rob Schneider is clearly the problem here
Well, we have learned a lot about Trump supporters and their “If you don’t allow me to oppress whoever I want, then YOU are an oppressor!” brand of logic in this thread. Go read up about Popper’s paradox of tolerance, guys.
i haven’t watched the Olympics since they were here in my country in the early 00s, but i heard the show was another paid propaganda for the Woke Culture, and that they bastardized the meaning of the French Revolution which (back then in 1789) it was all about equality between poor and rich, powerful and non powerful, somehow in the Olympics opening, they made the French Revolution to be about equality between straights and gays, which is ridiculous, because a gay rich guy has much more power than a poor straight person, no? So the whole thing was so hideous because they bastardized the spirit of the French Revolution
the hilarious moronic woke nonsense that don’t exist… keep at it
“another paid propaganda for the Woke Culture”? What was the first one?
An insult to the French Revolution by the French? Who gives a rat’s ass?
lady i can smell from miles away that you are from the United States and you are another totally brain-washed zombie, who eats up everything that the US media serves you, you seriously want an example of another paid propaganda??? how about the whole tv series programing from Netflix to start with? where you cannot even pinch a new tv show idea if you are not gonna present a script where everyone is gay, lesbian, transgender, and of course for me living in Europe i can tell you that this year they had a non-binary winning the Eurovision Song Contest which tops the ratings every year in Europe and all countries from Europe are participating, and no im not a Trump supporter i don’t vote in the US, i dont give a shit about him, and i know you will not understand anything that i said because you are already brain-washed. Jesus Christ you seriously asked for an example of the Woke Agenda propaganda? where do you live??? and by the way of course you don’t give a fuck about the meaning of the French Revolution, brainless fascists do not care about the fact that without the French Revolution we wouldn’t have all the freedom we have today, i’m sure you prefer the era before the freedom the people who died for us (and you are now mocking) gave to us by sacrificing their lives
Childish name calling is not a good way to win a debate. Seriously!
it was necessary due to the amount of stupidity, and ok even if i don’t have the best vocabulary, at least i have arguments, where are yours? or are u also searching for an example of propaganda like the brainless before? and by the way do you know something that i just thought? do you know how the common people won in the French Revolution (since it’s part of the topic) against their tyrant oppressors? it wasn’t by being polite! just read a book and you will soon find out that you are not winning a debate either by calling childish a behavior if the “childish” behavior is necessary, like it was in that era too, otherwise we would all still had no property, no freedom, but at least we wouldn’t have internet too, and we would all be saved from reading questions about where did we see an example of the woke culture propaganda 😅
When you’re in a hole stop digging … or not.
I cannot even pinch a loaf without thinking of your drivel
i already said you wouldn’t understand anything of what i’m saying, and immediately you prove me right 😅 nothing of substance, no counter arguments, only further stupidity 😅
The sky is blue in my world, it’s whatever color it is in yours.
I’m not going to waste time trying to “counter” something based in fantasy. So to you, I guess that means you win. To me, I win because I’m out. Bye
Does anyone actually care about the Olympics anymore? Must be a baby boomer thing.
Just there for the hammer-throw – all hammer-throw, all the time. And a little bit the marathon.
While I don’t care about the Olympics, except that I think that it’s good that they exist diplomatically, most of my friends are millennials, and some of them enjoy some of the sports. People enjoy different things, crazy as that may be for you to hear
Yes, I hate the Olympics due to the IOC and while I disagree that it’s good that they exist diplomatically, they actually make for an insane level of competition between nations (competing for medals) that a number of nations apparently now are deciding to give up on, it’s a complete lie when the IOC says ‘the Olympics are above politics’ and while it had been the case that the Olympics had been declining in viewership, whatever rebranding (or just the passage of time) the IOC has done has clearly worked and the ratings are way up.
