Semi-autobiographical story from Spain, about a young woman embarking on a quest to learn more about the parents who died when she was young, and their relationship as young lovers before she was born. It is a lightly fictionalized account of writer/director Carla Simón’s own experiences.

In 2004, an orphaned young woman, Marina, travels to Vigo to seek information about her biological father, who died from AIDS. She meets her uncle and the rest of her family on her father’s side, who are reluctant to bring up the past due to shame because of Marina’s biological parents’ struggles with substance abuse

Translation into plain English: Both parents died of “SIDA” (AIDS-related illness).

Mighty Ohio State has fallen

THE Ohio State University was defending a national championship and spent most of this year looking invulnerable at #1, a place they held from week two through week fifteen.

Many people felt that Miami shouldn’t have been in the tournament at all. They didn’t even qualify to play in the championship game in their own conference, and came into this game as 9.5 point underdogs.

None of that matters now.

Miami has made the final four by knocking off an SEC team and a Big Ten team. They have made it to that point with little offense. They scored only ten against A&M in round one, with 278 yards from scrimmage. Their offense scored only 17 against Ohio State in round two, and they again failed to reach 300 yards from scrimmage.

But, oh, that defense!

They gave a Heisman finalist QB the worst day of his sporting career. They sacked him five times and picked him off twice, including a pick-six. The Hurricanes caused the worst performance by an elite quarterback since 1998, when the Farrelly Brothers cast Brett Favre in There’s Something About Mary.

Weird trivia:

The top four seeds are 1-7 in the new format.

Last year, the top four seeds, coming off their first-round byes, all lost in the New Year’s Eve/Day round. Then the two best remaining teams, seeds 5 and 6, lost in the next round. Then the next best remaining team, seed 7, lost in the championship, leaving the eighth seed as the national champion.

This year, the 2, 3 and 4 seeds all lost. Only Indiana prevailed.

This is a micro-budget horror film produced by the performers, who used their real names and pretended to be making a documentary within the script, thus giving the project a “cinema verite” or “found footage” feel. Kris Collins starred, wrote, directed and co-produced.

The IMDb score of 3.8 demonstrates that they were not especially successful.

Paranormal investigators Kris, Celina, and their videographer Jay expect the usual scares when they set out on their latest case. But after being mysteriously rerouted to an abandoned house deep in the woods, they find themselves facing a force unlike anything they have encountered before. As the night spirals into chaos, missing crew members and eerie phenomena hint at an ancient, malevolent presence watching their every move.

Jasmine is a Turkish drama series on HBO Max about a young woman with a fatal heart condition who works as an escort to bribe her way onto a heart transplant list for herself and her stepbrother, leading to dark, morally complex choices and conflict with Turkish authorities over its “immoral” content. The show explores desperation, survival, and corruption within the medical world.

There’s really nothing to see here. As I see it, its content is not nearly immoral enough. Reminder to self: either abandon that dream to run for office in Turkey; or acquire stoning-proof clothing.

The Top Movies of 2025, According to NY Times Readers

The results were fascinating: a mix of box office hits and art-house winners. In some ways you aligned with the critics, especially in your very top picks. But controversial films like “Eddington” and “Friendship” also ranked high with readers even as documentaries barely made the cut.

The one film everyone agreed on was One Battle After Another, PTA’s latest, based (very loosely) on Thomas Pynchon’s Vineland. Readers rated it #1, and their two reviewers rated it #1 and #2. It isn’t rated extremely high at IMDb (7.8), but it’s off the charts with reviewers.
