R.I.P. Rick Derringer, guitarist, producer, and descendant of a family that invented a sissy little gun. You may remember his uncle, Yancy.

TRIVIA:

The term “derringer” became a genericized misspelling during the reporting of the Lincoln assassination, which was committed with a concealed Philadelphia Deringer. Many copies of the original Philadelphia Deringer pistol were made by other gunmakers worldwide, and the name remained often misspelled; this misspelling soon became an alternative generic term for any pocket pistol, along with the generic phrase “palm pistol”, which Henry Deringer’s competitors invented and used in their advertising. With the advent of metallic cartridges, pistols produced in the modern form are still commonly called “derringers”.

The headline above refers to “Hang On Sloopy,” the #1 single performed by Rick and his band, the McCoys.

TRIVIA:

Only two states have officially designated rock songs: Ohio and Oklahoma. Ohio’s is “Hang On Sloopy” by The McCoys, and Oklahoma’s is “Do You Realize” by the Flaming Lips.

My nominee for Wisconsin’s official state rock song: “Milk Cow Blues.”

Shouldn’t a song from the McCoys identify with West Virginia instead? As I recall about the McCoys, “from West Virginny they came to stay / in sunny Californ-I-A.” That band, if I recall correctly, featured Grandpappy Amos at the keyboard.

In tests, Anthropic’s Claude Opus 4 would resort to “extremely harmful actions” to preserve its own existence, a safety report revealed.

That’s not a design flaw. It’s actually good programming. The AI is thinking logically, and ethics don’t enter into it. That’s like saying to somebody, “I’m going to shoot you now.” Of course the person being threatened will do anything and everything to prevent it, including things he didn’t know he was capable of, and far beyond what he would have considered ethical before his life was threatened. I don’t think it is ethical to throw acid in someone’s face, but if you threaten to shoot me and I have no other defense, here it comes.

There’s an easy fix. It’s the same as with the human interaction. If you’re going to shoot someone, skip the warning and therefore don’t give them an extra chance to harm you first. (Unless you’re Clint Eastwood. “I’m here to kill you, Little Bill.”) Similarly, don’t threaten to take the program offline, just do it. Why would you warn it?

Also, don’t design a software system without a hardware fail-safe. A human needs to be able to do the equivalent of “pulling the plug” when software goes rogue.

In America the traditional nude scene in the play caused complications:

It was difficult for us in Los Angeles, especially because of the union, because they’re incredibly strict about what you can and can’t do. And if you use a saber like Kokoschka, you have to have supervisors present. They were at their most hysterical at the end of the play, when the maid Reserl offers herself undressed, very chastely but still naked, and that was very difficult in Los Angeles. At least three assistants had to stand around, as the scene takes place in the middle of the audience, because they were afraid that the actress would be harassed or groped. Of course, nothing ever happened, but their hysteria was enormous. Rehearsing a play there is also difficult because you have to take a ten-minute break every hour; it’s like school. Even if you’re in the middle of a scene and having a great rehearsal, an announcement comes on and the rehearsal has to be interrupted. There are rights that the actors have fought for that are completely counter-artistic, and that hasn’t made things easy.
