The Black Dagger Brotherhood is a new TV series on Passionflix, based on J.R. Ward’s popular paranormal romance novels. The series follows a society of vampire warriors as they fight to protect their race from the Lessers. The first season, based on the book Dark Lover, centers on Wrath, the unwilling King of the Vampires, and his mission to protect Darius’s half-breed daughter, Beth.

They attempted to maintain a certain stylized, mysterious aesthetic. This, combined with the fact that vampires are night creatures, results in scenes with dim lighting and artificial colors.

That’s really a shame, because it “coulda been a contenda.” The scene above probably would have looked something like this if they hadn’t fucked with it. (Of course, I had to guess which colors to use, so I tinkered around and picked what I liked best. That’s why my pics don’t match.)

I’m not buyin’ #7. It has to be a fake because the giant woman’s shadow is not cast in the same direction as every other object.

As for #8, it may be a photoshopped image, but the photograph itself is not photoshopped. Is that a riddle? Well, here’s the answer to that riddle: Many European cities cover up the scaffolding while a building is under repair. This is done by hanging a large screen over everything. In this case, the screen is a distorted image of the same building (which may or may not be a photoshopped image).

Number 11 I’ve seen before, and there’s a simple explanation, with no tricks at all. It’s just a hotel in South Korea that was designed to resemble a cruise ship.

Hindi-language dark indie comedy. It is rated 97% at Rotten Tomatoes.

The LA Times opined:

One of those films that deserves to be seen without knowing much about it, because of its unhinged and eventually violent twists, but always supported by a surprisingly colorful aesthetic.

To translate that into English: “Utterly fucked-up, but in a good way.”

The sound track is eclectic, to say the least.

I would not have known who that was except that it says so at the link, but she looks great for a woman who used to date Ben Franklin. Her breasts look especially great, but Ben never saw those, unless he could somehow look through the eyes of those pictures of him that were used to pay for them.

(She’s really 67, by the way.)

“10 Most Insane Rulers in History”

These are always fun to read about, although hellish to live through.

You can’t really quantify insanity, but these were some loonies, to be sure. Were they crazier than Vlad Tepes, Olga of Kiev, The Zhengde Emperor, Qin Shi Huang, Erik the allegedly 14th, etc? I don’t know how to measure that.

As usual in lists like these, there are failures in fact-checking.

Here are two examples that I know off the top of my head (suggesting that there are many others that would be noticed by professional historians, or with some research):

Caligula’s famous horse was named Incitatus, not Invictus

“Little Boots” threatened to make the horse a senator or consul, but never followed through, perhaps because death intervened (per Cassius Dio), or perhaps because he was just taunting the senators and never intended to do it. Caligula did pamper the horse outrageously. Historian Aloys Winterling, author of “Caligula: A Biography,” argues that insanity isn’t the only logical explanation for such behavior. Winterling suggests that many of the emperor’s more outrageous shenanigans, including his treatment of Incitatus, may have been designed to humiliate the senators and other aristocrats. By threatening to bestow a high public office on his horse, Caligula aimed to show the elites that their work was so meaningless an animal could do it.
