Shoshana is a 2023 British biographical thriller film directed by Michael Winterbottom. The film is set in 1930s/1940s British Mandatory Palestine. It follows the tragic love story of Shoshana Borochov (Irina Starshenbaum), daughter of one of the founders of socialist Zionism, and British police officer Tom Wilkin, while Wilkin and fellow police officer Geoffrey J. Morton hunt for Zionist militant Avraham Stern.
Michael Winterbottom is a highly intelligent man who has never been content merely to make a good living as a director. He has always been searching for new worlds to conquer in his 50-something films and countless TV shows, even when those worlds seem unlikely to produce profits. Some of his more conventional films are among my favorites; others I find intelligent but tedious; while some of his most daring works are too far “out there” for my taste.
This film is one of his more conventional. One thing Winterbottom finds especially interesting is the everyday human context behind important events and cultural trends, and he explored that again in this work.
The nudity in his films ranges from none, to modest, to kinky, and even all the way to hard core! The nudity in this particular film could be classified as “modest; almost none.”
