While waiting for her divorce papers, a repressed professor of literature is unexpectedly seduced by a carefree, spirited young lesbian.
Helen Shaver
Patricia Charbonneau
This film was made 40 years ago.
Remake time?
Nicole Kidman could play the Shaver part, thus breathing life into the Nicole Kidman Sapphic Conspiracy Theory. Kristin Stewart would fit in as the younger woman, although she’s not exactly carefree and spirited. Other pairing suggestions?
Other remakes to fulfill the NKSCT: Bound, Wild Side, Personal Best, The Hunger. Other suggestions?

Never heard of this theory, but “The Hunger”.
Added The Hunger and fixed the link.
One more suggestion: “Carol” the movie with Cate Blanchett and Rooney Mara.
I saw this as a double feature with “Parting Glances.” My two companions & I were three straight working bubbas — a house-painting crew. Of COURSE we were tripping over the luscious female nudity! But the amazing discovery of the day was (theretofore unknown to us) young Steve Buscemi as the AIDS-ailing rockstar in the second movie.
The Little Theatre (art house cinema) in downtown Rochester NY.
The Little is still there, approaching 100 years old, now the Little Theatre and Cafe, a beautiful and curious remnant of the Deco era, and a lingering reminder of our childhoods, when theaters had not yet moved to the ‘burbs. Even as a child, sitting in my parents’ Studebaker as we drove by, I always loved to look at that unique building.
Myra Breckinridge. You originally had the perfect pair with Raquel and Farrah, and Farrah was topless and obviously into it, but Raqy was clearly not inclined to make love with a chick, or even be nude, and she fucked the whole bed scene up. Next time they should use Jamie Lynn Sigler and Christina Applegate. There’d be a whole lotta shakin’ goin’ on.
The most frustrating thing about Raquel was that she agreed to do the topless scene in Cannery Row, but then for some reason the production company dropped her for Debra Winger. Why would they screw up that opportunity? I remember seeing that when it came out and it was boring. Having topless Welch would have at least given it great value forever.
Welch was fired from the movie for allegedly being “difficult”. She wanted to do her own hair and makeup (as she had done on other movies) but the studio claimed she was violating her contract by not using studio services and being late to the set. Welch was known as being troublesome on set from other productions, so they probably thought this would fly. She had negotiated a large salary for her role, and Winger was willing to work for a lot less. Welch sued the studio, claiming that she had only been hired to get money backers to fund the film, then let go in a bait-and-switch and won a large settlement. However she later stated that this hurt her career as few studios wanted to hire a potentially litigious actress.
Raquel had signed on to do a topless shower scene in 101 Rifles, but at the last minute, intimidated by being nude in front of a trainload full of Mexicans, she convinced the director that it would be “sexier” if she kept a t-shirt on and jiggled her boobs. How he fell for bullshit that in 1969 when she was in her beautiful young prime, I’ll never know. He probably felt sorry for her and acquiesced to her sudden shyness. She said in her book that although she liked her tits, they were “too far apart”. That might explain why she never did a nude scene. Closest I saw her come was a see-through swimming suit in some Playboy shots. And they were definitely not too far apart.
In another interview she said she didn’t want to show her nipples because they were dark brown, which would give away her Latino heritage. Her Bolivian father wanted his family to pass as Caucasian and she was ashamed of that aspect of herself for many years. Later in life she got over that and embraced her heritage fully but too late to get the goods out.
One of the hottest scenes in film history. I was convinced they were really going at it.
Got to love Helen Shaver. I remember her from the 1978 movie “In Praise of Older Women”.
Helen has an open-leg, show the full beaver scene in that movie.
Well worth seeing if you can find it.
Shaver was around 34 when this was released, making her younger than Stewart is now. I think we need to go younger for the care free lesbian. Maybe Millie Bobby Brown?
Can I propose Christina Ricci and Jenna Ortega.
Anya Taylor-Joy on substitutes bench.
“Blue Is the Warmest Color” should be remade every year. Paris Berelc and Penny Lane for the first one
THAT would be hot.
GOTTA be ScarJo and Charlize Theron.
Somebody else suggested Millie Bobby Brown for the young woman, which would work because she can play carefree and spirited. I like ScarJo, not as the younger woman, as you implied, but as the prim older woman who lets down her hair after a lifetime of repressed feelings.
Charlize, although one of the most beautiful women I’ve ever seen, may be a little too old for the role.
ScarJo and McKenna Grace then? Or Kiernan Shipka?
Wouldn’t that be something!
We’re creating a pervy version of fantasy sports. It’s fantasy lesbians.
Reboot of Brokeback Mountain? With Sweeney and JLaw?
Remake of “In a Lonely Place with Betty Gilpin in the Humphrey Bogart role and Allison Brie in the Gloria Grahame one. The great thing it, it would still make sense for Gilpin to take a cute waitress home! (The waitress winds up dead, setting up the plot of the movie.)
Thumbs up. I am for anything with Betty Gilpin.
… naked if possible, but I also like her clothed.
I saw this film a lot in my teens and 20s mainly for the sex and it was hot though I was really ignorant about the story as I was more interested in ass and titties back then. Now, I realize what an influential film it is in regards to queer cinema. It is one of its touchstones and the sex scenes still hold up.
SO many ideas for lezzie pair-ups – phones are open, moneymen
I wouldn’t mind seng a remake,as long as they extended the lesbian sex scene.Nicile Kidman would’ve rea ithe Hele Shaver role, but for the love of God keep Christian Stewart’s clothes on and far away from this movie
