If you believe the tabloids, there are no animals in Chinese zoos but dogs and donkeys painted to look like other animals.
Do these alleged impersonations actually fool people? Zoology is not one of my stronger suits, but even I was able to spot a problem or two with this one.

On the other hand, it makes it harder to hit by German battleships. (Unrelated joke: I went to the zoo, but all they had was one small dog. What a Shih Tzu!)
Typical American propaganda designed to make the Chinese look bad. That’s a donkazebra, an unusual hybrid species native to limited areas of southeast Asia. A fine pack animal, sturdy lower regions but limited capacity.
how did you find this, it’s not trending in China lol
This is what the NY Post article said about the photo that Scoop included:
“In one photo, a zoo worker was seen standing next to a donkey which was defaced with nearly perfect black and white stripes running across its body.”
Nearly perfect? Really? I’ve never seen a zebra with black and white stripes meeting at 90-degree angles, much less one where some of the white stripes crossed the black ones. The article links to a story about a Chinese zoo that was caught painting dogs and passing them off as pandas. I was actually surprised at how much the dogs looked like pandas. I mean, they were clearly dogs, but I think they would almost definitely win an animal Halloween costume contest. The Zebronkeys? Not so much. Maybe if the donkey entered the contest as a pinata.
This is the link to the panda-dog story. It includes a video of the dogs.
There’s also a recent story about a Chinese aquarium whose “whale shark” turned out to be a robot. Can’t wait to see what they try next.
Didn’t a Chinese zoo get caught exhibiting a human in a bear costume recently? Or did I hallucinate that?
Snopes.com maintains that it actually was a bear–specifically a sun bear, the smallest species of bear (adults weigh less than 150 lbs.). So maybe we let them have this one.
How about dogs painted or dyed as tigers? The pseudo-pandas looked almost credible. These tigers are absurd.
