Polish drama. The literal translation is also the title used to distribute the film to English-speaking markets: “How to Fall Out of Love.”

I never understand the description of Polish films in Polish. I don’t even understand this one in English. Apparently it is a film for those who love rhetorical questions.

The protagonist makes a love story about her friend Agata’s relationship, searching for the answer to the question: what is love? The relationship falls apart, but the film endures. The protagonist remains, accompanying the desperate Agata, overwhelmed by memories, through her daily life. A reunion with her ex brings no relief, and returning home ends in emotional disintegration. Agata reviews old film footage, discovering that her memories were hiding something. She gains control by taking up the camera to find the truth. Is memory just an illusion? If our memory is creation, then what is film?

What, indeed?

I think you can probably guess which country this drama comes from, given that it stars people with last names like Chrzescianski, Krzysztofik and Mxyzptlk. It is marketed in English-speaking markets as We Haven’t Lost Our Way (2022), which is a direct translation from the Polish title.

Ewa is a translator. She gives private English lessons. She lives alone but maintains a close relationship with her parents and sister, Joanna. One day, she receives a package from her ex-partner, Eryk, informing her that he is going on a trip. Reading the notebook, Ewa becomes certain that the described trip is a record of Eryk’s illness and depression, and that all events are fictitious.

This is a low-budget straight-to-video murder mystery.

A man falls for his nubile stepdaughter. When his hot wife founds out about this, she is furious. Murder ensues. It’s obvious who’s the guilty party. Or is it?

Britt Ekland is probably the best actor in the film, which should tell you something. I’m not sure the others were even professional actors. They deliver some lines like “Tex and Edna Boyle” in those old SCTV skits. Stephanie Grant, whoever she is, stars as the stepdaughter, but has no other credits on IMDb. Suzanne Barker had no previous credits before this film, and nothing significant afterwards. Given the fact that it was shot on video tape with actors who must have worked for scale (or less?), I suppose that whatever they paid Britt Eckland was probably most of the total budget.

The bad news: it’s only available on VHS, which is a shame because of the copious nudity.

The sorta good news: since it was originally shot on video tape to be sold on video tape, the clarity is better than many productions shot on film and converted to video.
