Every time I see Donald Trump’s approval rating, I wonder, “Who are the 37% that still approve?” I feel the same way about the 59% Popcorn meter for this film. Somebody has to be gaming that score. Who are the 59% of average movie-goers that like this film? This movie is so pretentious that Andrew Lloyd Webber is probably turning it into a West End musical as I type. If it were any more pretentious, Tarkovsky would come back from the grave to claim it. Even the nude scene is pretentious. I can understand some critics liking it because they are, as a general lot, highly susceptible to anything with artistic aspirations. They invariably kow-tow to “artists,” perhaps to establish their own intellectual bona fides, which they would pronounce “BO-na FEE-dess,” as if they were Cicero declaiming in the senate.
I got through the first half, which ends approximately with Hathaway’s nude scene, then resolved to watch no more, unless somebody tells me that Hathaway poses Hustler-style in the second half. After investing an hour in it, I wasn’t even remotely interested to find out how it came out, because the characters are so detached and lifeless that it wouldn’t matter to me whether they all found love and happiness, or the Texas Chainsaw guy came in and started chopping them up.
There is an OK look at her butt. I assume it is Hathaway. I haven’t read anything that would suggest a double, but between the darkness and the strobe effect, it could be anyone in Hollywood, possibly excepting Danny McBride.
Here is a video of the actual nude scene.
Here is a video representing my guess as to what it would look like if Paul Verhoeven had directed the film in the 1990s.

The Queen still got it.
! The queen of pop can still give me a great erection!
¡How much did they pay her to film the bathtub scene?
Easy with Paul Verhoeven. He’s the most under appreciated genius in the history of filmmaking. In my personal rankings, he’s right after Kubrick.
I came to praise Caesar, not to bury him. I think I’ve seen every movie he’s made since 1973, and I like them all, albeit for different reasons. He’s the rare case of an outstanding European director who took the Hollywood money and managed to fit right in, creating a string of memorable and profitable Hollywood movies. The old boy is pushin’ 90, and still turns out a movie now and then.
I wonder. Is the the best director who was never nominated for or received an Oscar? It must be between him and Sergio Leone. (Howard Hawks and Godard received honorary Oscars.)
Who’s under appreciating Verhoeven? He was a critics darling before he came to America. Made a bunch of classic films that millions of people love (Robocop, Total Recall, Starship Troopers, etc), took a break, then became a critics darling again. He has a massive fan base.
Liberals usually despise his American work. And since there are a lot of “intellectual” liberals who comment here, I was expecting more of an argument. Nice to see some bipartisanship.
The only ones I ever see trying to censor Showgirls-esque nudity isn’t liberals. I believe you said you live in NY, and the only reason you’re not being asked for an ID verification (or using a VPN) sure as hell isn’t because of liberal policy. And the political themes of a dystopian world where vigilante Robocop getting revenge on the the mega-corporate that owns the corrupt police state while the world goes to hell?
Not sure whether it’s what you think of others or what you think his messaging is, but you may want to get that compass checked.
Edit: Sure as hell is conservatives on the whole internet nudity = ID verification front, that is.
This is the problem with politics now. Everyone judges the other side by its nut jobs.
It basically comes down to: “Who do you despise more?” The Bible thumping, conspiracy theorist militia rednecks;, or the woke, unemployed, welfare queen, criminal rapist, socialist safe spacers.
I’m a lifelong libertarian. And yes, I’m a New Yorker. But I’m definitely conservative in the sense that a large part of my “I don’t give a fuck” attitude includes low taxes and heavy law enforcement.
Indy, think you may need to go back 1960s when liberals were awesome.
4th Man is a classic, I don’t care how Dutch it is.
That last picture does not look like Anne Hathaway, like not even close. Could be distortion, I suppose
Let’s face it, when you have to do that much re-touching, the original is barely recognizable. The darker the original images, the less the brightened images will resemble the original. In this case, the combination of the dark original and the strobe effect means that the final product is not so much “brightening” as “pure imagination.”
