La Vida Breve is a romantic comedy about the brief reign of the Spanish king Luis I. It is a very short and virtually unknown period in the history of the Spanish monarchy. Louis ruled for just seven months, between the time his father abdicated and his own death from smallpox at 17. Upon his death, his father reluctantly returned to the throne, and reigned 22 more years!
One of the most interesting parts of Luis’s story concerns his young wife, Louise Élisabeth, who was known for unstable, impulsive behavior. She refused to wear undergarments, enjoyed embarrassing courtiers by exposing her body to them, and would suddenly strip completely naked in public. Luis remanded her to a convent, but she wrote letters begging his forgiveness, and he eventually relented.
Her infamous incidents are illustrated below, but the nudity could have been so much better!
