Yet a poor imitation of Mom too…
(her Mom was on a whole ‘nother level in her prime than she is)
For Sure! She needs to lift some weights.
A boring lifeless faded xerox of her mother . No charisma.
But certainly relatable.
As a boring, lifeless, faded xerox of my father, I can definitely empathize.
Dear god – If you’re boring and lifeless, what the hell am I??!! I have never lived anywhere in Europe, let alone travelled extensively or had a Russian girlfriend/wife.
Well, the Russian girlfriend part is relatively fixable.
I was basically just a grind. All that travel and the overseas assignments involved working 16-hour days in foreign countries, talking to retailers and suppliers by day, then writing boring analyses in the evening. In the little time I had left, I tried, often unsuccessfully, to find room for family activities
I had some talent for quantitative analysis, I could string together readable sentences, and I went out of my way to serve clients, both external and in-house. That was my life, and it occupied most of my waking hours. Nobody would ever describe me as the life of the party. When I wrote a well-received comedy show for the Southland Marketing Christmas Party, many people gave me compliments like “So funny. I never knew you had a sense of humor.” And those were people who had known me for years!
When I retired, I was finally free to become my dad, or at least a boring, academic version of my dad, who was fun 100% of the time. Never taking anything seriously is not necessarily the right recipe for fatherhood, but damn, he was fun to be around, and I wish I could be more like him. Sadly, that’s not in me, but I can sometimes kinda-sorta simulate it on paper.
But you retired quite early…
True. I had not yet turned 50. Weirdly enough, I have now been retired more years than I worked.
Thank you, Shell Oil!
