Lauren Lyle stars as Mia Beaton in the BBC psychological thriller The Ridge, a drug-addicted anaesthetist who travels to New Zealand for her sister’s wedding, only to find her sister is dead and a murder investigation begins. Lyle’s character is complex, struggling with past trauma and a hidden opioid addiction while navigating secrets in a small New Zealand town. The six-part series is a co-production between BBC Scotland and Sky New Zealand and is available on BBC iPlayer.
The Times, the Guardian and the Daily Mail all gave this series rave reviews, but the user comments on IMDb are quite harsh.

Bummer. I was looking forward to this one.
You still might like it. It seems to me that the IMDb commenters are reacting to the fact that it’s not their father’s BBC. The show takes (or at least tries to take) a little edgier, quirkier, more innovative approach, even bordering on weird at times. And the fact that I hated the music means nothing. Musical tastes are subjective. So I guess I’m saying you should probably see for yourself and watch the first one. Some of those reviewers said “I watched the first and won’t watch any more,” but I don’t think you will necessarily feel the same way.
Doesn’t appeal to the BritBox crowd…
The BBC from the 70s to the 90s had even more nudity
I wasn’t referring to the nudity. It has a “hipper” style, as opposed to the typical straight-forward narrative and stolid camera work of the old shows
Sorry, but your “perfect storm” made it sound to me like you gave it a pretty strong thumbs-down. And, your suggestion to test the waters by watching only the first episode is exactly the thing that most often invalidates the opinion of the reviewer in my eyes. I won’t give a review at all, not even a negative one, if I’m unwilling to watch enough to be darn sure.
At my age, I’ve seen many shows of more than ten episodes where I thought it was shit until the season finale, & it changed my mind. As I said in my off-topic comment in another thread, it’s only 6 hours & if you aren’t triggered by “woke” politics, it doesn’t make any sense to fish but then cut bait too soon.
Eh, forgot the part that pertains to this particular follow-up comment of yours. It’s the twisty story & confusion that in the end contributes to the mystery turning into a thriller. You’re right about that. And my reaction is that the same point is also the reason to expect a fair number of viewers may have a change of heart in the last or very last episode.
Typo, sb: “in the last couple of episodes.”
