La Cid supports and promotes her boxing movie
I watched the film yesterday. Sydney altered her appearance significantly, so don’t go to the film expecting her to look like the picture above. You’ll see her with dark, curly hair and much heavier, almost unidentifiable as La Cid. The critics almost universally praised Sydney, and I agree that she did a great job.
The film was a total bust at the box office. The opening weekend was $1.3 million in 2,184 theaters. That was one of the twelve worst openings in history among films in more than 2,000 theaters,
And that was the good news! In its second week it set the all-time record for the largest drop from the first week – 92%.
On the final day of its two-week run, it averaged ten dollars per theater. That means it couldn’t even draw one person per day! And I assume it was screened at least twice, maybe more, so it must have played to empty theaters more than half of the time. If only Pee Wee Herman had jerked off to this movie, he would have gone forever undetected. In fact, he could have brought Chairry, plus J.D. Vance and his favorite couch, and they could have had a furniture orgy without being noticed.
In contrast, the few people that watched the film seemed to find it satisfying.

The Tomato Meter was 67%, which is much better than I would have guessed. I’d call it competent but mediocre, a paint-by-numbers pic that follows the usual sports film narrative with no distinction or surprises.

Die, My Love is a 2025 American psychological drama film based on a 2012 Spanish novel, “Matate, amor” by Ariana Harwicz.
Grace and Jackson, a young couple who move from New York City to Jackson’s rural childhood home in Montana, are in search of a quieter life. As they adjust to their new surroundings and become parents, Grace begins to struggle with feelings of isolation and psychological distress. Her deteriorating mental health gradually drives their marriage into unsettling and unpredictable territory.
Now that I’ve seen the film in HD, I realize that these scenes are a lot better than I thought.

Die, My Love had a disappointing box office performance. The opening weekend was $2.6M, despite a wide release in 2000 theaters. The average gross was $1,319 per theater for that week. Assuming 21 screenings per theater and $15 per ticket, that means it played for an average of 4 people.
The total gross was around $10.4 million worldwide, $5.5 million in the USA.That contrasts with the $24 MUBI spent to acquire it.
The weak box office was no surprise. It was never capable of being a crowd pleaser. It’s just an unpleasant, feel-bad movie. It’s one of those films made especially for critics, as indicated by this comparison:

The Jennifer Lawrence character is not just psychologically unhealthy, she’s also just plain mean, like Faye Dunaway as Joan Crawford. As she fought against mental illness taking her life, I was rooting for illness. After about 20 minutes I was thinking of Nikki Glaser’s line about Alec Baldwin’s suicidal thoughts: “In his memoir, he bravely admitted that he had once considered suicide and I just wanna say (turns to Baldwin) that meant a lot to me ‘cuz I have also considered … your suicide, and I have some ideas. I even know what I’m gonna wear.”
Unfortunately, it took another hour or more of unnecessary exposition before the inevitable happened.
A few critics pointed out that they softened the character from the novel.
Note to self: avoid that novel.

This story follows the theater group of a renowned director who wants to put together a play critical of the pharmaceutical industry. To support the actors, the director hires a medical consultant, but she sabotages the production by giving the team a drug named Zyprecs, intended to make them addicted and to put the pharmaceutical industry in a good light. The actors gradually begin to suffer a nervous breakdown from the side effects of the medication, but the premiere is getting closer and closer. The consultant intervenes ever more deeply in the production processes and artistic work. In addition to power struggles and funny production ideas, the film deals with the question of how communication and art processes work among narcissistic artists. The camera follows an ensemble and connects the layers with a voice over from the director of the film and star photographer Edgar Herbst. The film shows on multiple levels how art and films are created, what happens behind the scenes and what many take for granted.
It’s quite a good nude scene.
