Ukrainian coming-of-age drama.

After transferring from a downtown high school, Tonia (Alina Cheban) befriends a group of badass youngsters, trying to find protection from the people from her past and a place she truly belongs. They spend time together, roaming around Kyiv’s post-socialist suburbs, having fun and getting in trouble. Soon, Tonia falls in love with Zhurik (played by Zachary Shadrin who was the first Ukrainian actor ever submitted for Emmy consideration, for his role in Apple TV series Little America). When she also falls for Sania (Arthur Aliiev), she finds herself tangled up in an alluring secret love triangle. But Tonia’s painful past still haunts her, challenging this newfound friendship and romance. Will she be able to find her own pass or lose herself in this new controversial relationship? Set in Kyiv in the late 1990s, this is a story of the young and rebellious amid the ruins of the Soviet regime. Those who had to grow up faster due to the circumstances but got lost in the adult world. A story of which we need constant reminding, as some things only exist at the moment, while others last forever.

Maks Pinter, a successful Zagreb lawyer, managed to get the charges for double murder against his client, the rich and powerful Dinko Horvat, dropped. At the celebration party, Maks is drunk and tells Dinko he killed the workers, who only came asking about their salaries, in cold blood. The confrontation with one of the pillars of society makes Maks an undesirable person, he loses his partner and clients, and his wife leaves him. With his university-days girlfriend Nina, he embarks on a revenge mission. On the other hand, no one in this story is entirely innocent and everyone is tightly connected.

Slavery is now illegal in every country in the world. Such bans also extend to forced labor and human trafficking. The problem is that there are today more slaves in the world than ever before. An estimated 30 million people are trapped in slavery. Of those, the largest number of slaves are in India, with up to 14 million slaves.

Not only is slavery still legal in the United States, but it is specifically allowed in the constitution. The 13th Amendment allows slavery “as a punishment for crime whereof the party shall have been duly convicted.” As the result of this constitutional loophole, there are still states that require able-bodied inmates to work without any compensation. Three examples are Arkansas, Georgia and Texas.

As noted in the comments, there is also a very fine line between military conscription and slavery. Under some reasonable definitions, there is no line at all. Slavery can be defined as “forced labor without compensation,” but many would argue that any forced labor is slavery, irrespective of compensation. By that definition, military conscription is not only a system of slavery, but a system that places those slaves in life-threatening conditions. Mandatory military service is still in effect in many countries and was not abolished in the USA until 1973.
