French romantic melodrama. Original title: Un peu de soleil dans l’eau froide. (“A Little Sunshine on the Cold Water”)

Nathalie Silvener, a married woman, falls for Gilles, a depressed and brilliant Parisian journalist who is already in a relationship with a model.

I never could figure out the difference between Claudine Auger and Claudine Longet. I suppose one of the key differences is that Auger didn’t kill any skiers.

That we know of.

Auger’s career got off to a great start when she was cast opposite Sean Connery in Thunderball, a film which gave her immediate international recognition at 24. She even snuck a flash of nipple into her portrayal of Domino. Superstardom eluded her, however. More to the point of this blog, she did remarkably little nudity for a French actress. A Few Hours of Sunlight was perhaps her nudity highlight.

She retired around 1997 and passed away in 2019, at age 78, following a long illness.

The Currents is an Argentine/Swiss psychological drama. The story centers on a successful 34-year-old Argentine fashion designer who, after receiving an award in Switzerland, experiences an emotional breakdown and jumps from a bridge into the Rhône River, miraculously being rescued by the current. Back in Buenos Aires, she reunites with her husband Pedro and their 5-year-old daughter Sofía, and tries to resume her family and work routine, but her behavior has changed completely. She is distant and withdrawn, exhibiting symptoms of mental and physical distress, as well as a persistent itching of her scalp.

This is yet another erotic quickie from the Philippines. It’s not important enough to discuss, but I’m posting it because the edit came out better than I expected. The scene was shot with a day-for-night filter, and I removed it.

Large Video – Rica Gonzales, Fhat Gonzales – Undergrads (2024)

This was considered an important film in 1969, and Catherine Burns was nominated for an Oscar for her supporting performance. I saw it in a theater when I was in college, and I did not share the critical appreciation of this film or Ms. Burns. I found the film slow, and her acting utterly inexpressive, so it did not surprise me that the film drifted into obscurity. For years it was out-of-print, available only on the used VHS market, and there seemed to be no hope for an upgrade because there was no known copy of reel three. Fortunately, Warner was recently able to replace the missing reel, leading to this restored Blu-Ray release.

Last Summer was rated X when it was first released in 1969, but cuts were later made to a graphic rape scene at the end of the film, and the MPAA gave the cut version an R rating. The R version was the only one currently available on video until July 14, when Warner Archive released the uncut version on Blu-Ray.

Last Summer is based on a novel by Evan Hunter, and apparently follows the plot pretty closely. Evan Hunter was originally a pen name for a guy named Lombino, but he later made it his legal real name. As Hunter he wrote the novel The Blackboard Jungle (which became a movie) and wrote the screenplay for The Birds. But he still had other pen names, one of which was Ed McBain, and under that name he wrote a series of semi-well-known detective novels which became known as the 87th Precinct series.

Catherine Burns’ story is a curious one. One might have expected that an Oscar nod in her feature film debut would vault her several rungs higher on the fame ladder, but that couldn’t be farther from the truth. Her film career was over just two years later, when she was just 26 years old. She picked up occasional jobs on crappy TV shows like Love American Style, and worked in an occasional made-for-TV movie, but even those opportunities had disappeared by 1985, at which time she dove full-time into a new career as a writer.

She and her husband lived a quiet, private life in Washington state, where she died in 2019 at 73.

A medium-budget thriller from the USA, featuring some B-list celebs like Henry Thomas and Teri Hatcher. The film was written and directed by “Bill” from “Bill and Ted.”

An art teacher spends his nights painting. One night he hears noises in the loft over his. Investigating, he discovers an interloper, who claims he is going to rent the area despite the landlord’s earlier assurances that he would not rent the area. Shortly after this incident, the landlord is found murdered. The investigation turns towards a drunken evictee who was seen arguing with the landlord. However, his unwanted neighbor appears threatening and malevolent. Plagued by nightmares, the artist also starts acting irrationally and becomes a suspect.

In the late 90s and early oughts, it seemed that Marisol might break through, but it never happened. In fact, she had no IMDb credits in feature-length films from 2010-2022. She is now in her mid-50s, and has started to pick up work here and there.

Thriller from Brazil. It is marketed to English-speaking countries as Drenched in Blood, but the title actually means “Blood-Soaked Beard.”

A man decides to end his own life and asks one of his children to take care of his dog after his death. In this dramatic conversation, the father reveals to his son the mysterious disappearance of his grandfather in a small fishing town. Then begins the saga of the guy and his dog in search of answers that involve his life and that of his family. A film that involves mystery and action in a passionate setting of the southern coast of Brazil.
