Is The Kate McGarrigle you are referring to the wife of Loudon Wainright III and the mother of Rufus Wainright and Martha Wainwright? Kate McGarrigle was an excellent Canadian folk singer with her sister Anna McGarrigle. They are probably most famous for their song “Heartbeats Accelerating” which was a minor later hit for Linda Rondstandt.
Loudon Wainwright I think is most known for his novelty song “Dead Skunk in the Middle of the Road” but he wrote many non disguised songs about his family including the song “Daughter” or (‘That’s my Daughter’) which was not written for Martha Wainwright. His family have, at best, mixed feelings about this as Loudon Wainwright himself admitted in a least one of his songs that he was often a very nasty person and his family was not happy that he got to present his side of the story to the public..
