A fair bit of nudity in the first update for 2019 with multiple scenes in the French/Australian drama Alice, the Irish/Australian drama Animals, and two horror movies: Cult Girls and Ashburn Waters. There are also some good nude scenes in Angel of Mine (see Noomi Rapace below), Come To Daddy and Dirt Music. Strangely, a lot of this update is populated by international actresses, far more than usual.

This was one of our Top Nude Scenes of 2008.

She was more recently in The Plot Against America, and you can barely tell it’s the same person who appeared in Revolutionary Road.

New “thriller.”

OK, stifle those yawns. I know there’s no nudity, or anything very close, but it’s Nicole Kidman, so I cut it some slack because she’s a nudity legend with a horde of fans.

A woman’s picture-perfect life in quaint Holland, Michigan crumbles, when she and a friend uncover a twisted secret in their midst.

I started to watch the movie, but abandoned it because it took too long to develop as a thriller, it didn’t seem to have enough of a point to make it a drama, and the social satire was too understated to make it a comedy. I figured that such a hastily formed opinion wasn’t worth jack straws, but I later discovered that most critics (who presumably watched the whole film) wrote some version of the same thing.

The New York Times added a few more wrinkles:

The film’s unusual backdrop, unresolved subplots and dream-sequence fakeouts are ultimately all distractions from a story that doesn’t make much sense.

The critical consensus alleviated my sense of regret about not finishing the film, but it left me wondering why such a distinguished screen star thought this project was worth her time after she had read the script. I suppose it was all about the benjamins.

French crime drama. Original title: La maison assassinée

After World War I, a young ex-soldier, Sébastien Monge, returns to his home village. Ignorant of his past, he learns that, 24 years before, his entire family was slain in their home one stormy night. Only Sébastien, then a four-month old baby, was spared.

Ingrid’s performance earned her a Cesar nomination as the Most Promising Actress. She lost to Catherine Jacob for Life Is a Long Quiet River. I guess the Academy made the right choice, because Jacob is still acting, and Held retired from the profession more than 30 years ago. She is now an art historian and lecturer.

But she was a righteous babe in this film. (The screen grabs aren’t that impressive, but the video below gives you a better idea of her appeal.)

Judith was in great demand in the early 90s after her career as a child star. She was just 18 in The Disenchanted and 19 in Paris Awakens.

Beth, a teenager in the midst of a painful moral education, is put in the unenviable position of holding her family together and debasing herself at the suggestion of both her scornful bedridden mother and her no-good boyfriend.

Paris Awakens

French drama. Original title: Paris s’éveille

Adrien arrives in Paris to stay with his father, Clément, whom he hasn’t seen in four years. Clément lives with Louise, a twenty-year-old girl eager for independence and success. After an argument, Louise leaves Clément for Adrien.

French thriller. AKA “Everyone calls me Mike.”

Thibault, Isabelle and their son Jeremie board their sailboat Joshua to sail the world and live a new life. The Gulf of Aden is watched over by Somali pirates, and while stopping in Djibouti, the happy family meets Mike, a Black man they know nothing about but innately trust. Inviting Mike to board the ship, the quartet travels onward in their sailboat.
