From “Love” to “The Brown Bunny” and Abdellatif Kechiche’s controversy-marred “Mektoub,” Cannes has been riled up by many an unsimulated sex scene.

I’ve seen some of these films. I should note that Vincent Gallo’s cock in “The Brown Bunny” was a fake. It was prop he took from a film he did for Claire Denis a few years before he made that film.
The second “Mektoub” is very unlikely going to see the light of day as that film was DESTROYED at Cannes back in 2019. It was made by the man who did “Blue is the Warmest Color” (great film BTW) as he was known for making films that played into social issues and such. Yet, Abellatif Kechiche is also an asshole as the sex scenes in “Blue” were filmed for about more than a week as the actresses were upset about the ordeal. He went from being this socially-conscious filmmaker to then deciding “I’m just make a film about ass & titties”. There’s nothing wrong with that but without the consent of the actors, that is just wrong.
I know that the claims that the penis in “Brown Bunny” is a fake came from either Gallo or Sevigny or both (I forget exactly who), but it’s extremely unlikely to be true. If it’s a prop during the blowjob scene, it’s a far more realistic prop than anything else seen at the time. I think the story about it being a fake is historical revisionism by the actors who regret performing a blowjob on screen.
We do have a lot of in-site expertise around this sort of thing. Dawid, care to weigh in? Or maybe TrutherBob’s crack team of fappers can make a ruling.
Your obsession with me is becoming meme-like.
“Meme-like”? I’M A STAR!!
OK, fappers, looks like it’s up to you. If you can unhand your hogs long enough – thoughts?
The whole Kechiche story has never been proven in any court. He was simply canceled like any other hetero sexual male director who likes to shoot (explicit) female nudity. He’s not the first, he won’t be the last. They’re already trying to do the same with Taylor Sheridan.
Margo Stilley is a classic beauty who’s shown some range in Steve Coogan’s “The Trip” comedies and a handful of episodes of “The Royals.” But I don’t think there’s any denying that “9 Songs” had an impact on her career, nor is there any surprise in her costar Kieran O’Brien finding at least two or three roles for every one she’s landed since then.
The difference between Kieran and Margo just looking at the IMDB is that he was an established actor when he did that film, and the work he’s done post-9 songs has been episodic television and TV film mostly.
9 songs was Margo’s 2nd feature after the unreleased Hippie Hippie Shake, so she was an unknown trying to break in. Beyond that she seems to have wanted to be a film actress mostly from her choices and not ‘just work’ in TV or telefilm. Also she says (in the quotes section) she received quite a bit of harassment after the movie was released, I remember her keeping out of the public eye for awhile afterwards, so that probably stunted her career trajectory as well.
Looks like also she’s transitioned to producing and motherhood, so she chose what was important to her. Comparing their careers post 9 songs should indicate one had more success than the other.
9 Songs was her debut. (9 Songs Came out in 2004. Hippie, Hippie Shake was filmed in 2007.)
My mistake, IMDB shows it on the bottom of her profile without a date, I didn’t dig any further to confirm when it was lensed or delayed.
My comment pretty much stands as-is, with the caveat of that error.
I saw this year’s Cannes line-up and it’s hard to find a film that has the potential for some decent female nudity. A lot of gay films this year, but that’s already a global trend. In the past, there were at least some lesbian films from Europe, but now it’s hard to find even that.
So I looked up “In the Realm Of the Senses”, which I suppose never played Cannes. That led me to Wikipedia’s extensive list of films containing unsimulated sex. I reckon you’ve got them all in the Funhouse, right?
Chloe Sevigny is gonna have “I sucked off Vincent Gallo on camera” on her tombstone
It really is a shame that unsimulated sex in feature films is a matter of controversy and criticism, and that actors who dare to cross the boundary and film it often find it career-limiting or are even subject to harassment. Sex is an important part of life and it would be nice if actual sex could be portrayed positively within the larger context of the plot in regular movies without it being considered porn. My view is that such portrayals would be for a different purpose than porn. And that is not to denigrate porn itself, albeit much of porn is unimaginative and of poor quality (which also is a product of our society having pushed depictions of sex to the margins).
I admire serious actors who have had the courage to give unvarnished sexual portrayals on film. No doubt there would be more willing to do it if such portrayals were celebrated rather than being viewed with prudish disapproval. Maybe there should be an Academy award for that category.
