It’s a gut-wrenching scene with a fully committed performance from Jessie.
She is now considered an absolute lock to win the Best Actress Oscar. If you want to place a bet on actresses:
(Odds are expressed as ratio of amount won to amount wagered. In other words, a contract with Rose Byrne costs 3.1 cents, and you would therefore win 96.9 cents if she wins, or 31-1.)
Jessie Buckley 1-24
Rose Byrne, 31-1
Renate Reinsve, 165-1
Emma Stone, 199-1
Kate Hudson, 249-1.
(There’s a good payoff if you want to bet “no” on Jessie, 23-1. Good luck with that.)
SIDEBAR: In recent days, Michael B. Jordan has passed Timotheêéèëēĕěẽėẹęẻ Chalamet as the slight favorite to win Best Actor, thus dampening the latter’s hopes to win the ẹęẻ he needs to complete the the “e” perfecta for his first name. Just a mohth ago, Chalamet was at 78%, Jordan at 7%.
Video. WARNING: It’s a heartbreaking, brilliantly performed scene, but it’s an an immense download, and there’s no real, visible nudity. (You see it brightened and enhanced in the stills above).
Jessie has appeared here several previous times, with a bit of nudity in four other films: Romeo and Juliet (2021); Wicked Little Letters (2023); Beast (2017); The Lost Daughter (2021). She also posed naked with a fish.

I don’t often cry at movies, but I cried throughout this scene, and in a number of other scenes in Hamnet.
She also briefly shows nip in the new The Bride movie, although not largely attractive (similar to Gwyneth’s scene in Marty Supreme).
More attractively, there’s a couple Peta or art photos out there were she models with a fish and an her tits out.
The problem is, she doesn’t like cats, so….
I’m happy to see Amy Madigan at the top of the odds board. And how about Sean Penn likely winning his third!?
Compensating for not giving him one for his legendary performance as Spicoli.
Please no. That was a one-note performance by Penn in a deeply-muddled, unenjoyable movie.
“… deeply-muddled, unenjoyable movie.”
I’ll bet you don’t get very many party invitations
I wrote in detail on this forum why I did not think that One Battle After Another was good or enjoyable and I am not the only one who thought it was a deeply misguided movie. I like lots of other movies though and thought that this was a very strong year for films. I really loved Hamnet and Sinners, for example. And I do get plenty of party invitations. 😀
He may not deserve it, but it is nice to see somebody nominated for playing a comic villain. Peter Sellers was nominated for Dr. Strangelove, and Lee Marvin won for Cat Ballou, but the honors for comic villainy are few and far between.
That’s true for comedy in general. For heaven’s sake, Jeff Bridges wasn’t even nominated for playing The Dude, and the Academy loves that guy.
Agreed, but the comic aspect of One Battle After Another was lost on me. I really did not understand why people were laughing in the theatre. I just thought it was a sad, miserable film about stupid people. I don’t know if we were supposed to be cheering for the main characters, but if so I don’t understand why my fellow progressives would want to see the progressive cause represented by a bunch of moronic, druggy, incompetent losers. It plays into stereotypes used by the right and undermines what I believe in.
Chalamet dropped a nuke on his chances a couple days ago with his ignorant opinions on the arts.
Jessie’s gonna win, hope she works for Lanthimos or the Substance director next
