Or as the kids say today, “No shit, Armlock.” Young people are struggling with reduced attention spans and weakening critical thinking skills. Though there has been a demonstrably steep decline in cognitive skills since the COVID-19 pandemic due to the educational disruption it presented, these trends have been in evidence…

C Bull Shit. That is what CBS is now. Was there anything other than football and “60 Minutes” (until recently) that was good from CBS?
I don’t pay a lot of attention to what network a show is on (any more than what label my music is on). Still, I can’t think of an example of ‘good show on CBS’. Even football, if they give Brady a mike I have to sit there riding the mute button whenever he opens his fancy-poodle piehole.
As for actually watching the clip of what these devious shitweasels are doing with my taxes, I’m going to wait til after the gym when I’m more awake. Meanwhile thank you Canadians and leakers generally for another fine uncensoring.
Oh no. Bari Weiss is trying to help make the news slightly more fair, honest, and down the middle. It’s the end of news, free speech, and free press!
It is not the purpose of news to be “down the middle.” The purpose is to be accurate.
To your larger point, CBS did solicit the administration’s reaction. They requested comment from the White House, the State Department, and the Department of Homeland Security, all of whom declined to comment.
It’s the job of the news to accurately report both sides of the issues. For too long in this country, we’ve gotten half of most stories. For instance, in this case. If you read a story by someone other than CNN or CBS about what happened, you’ll see that while the WH, DHS and State Dept declined to be interviewed for the story, they did each provide a statement to CBS. The producer of the story chose to ignore those statements, and then used weasely language to make it sound like they got radio silence. Bari Weiss asked that they redo the piece to include reference to those official statements, and the producer threw a completely unbiased tantrum about censorship.
The statement provided to CBS had nothing to do with the story. It was political spin on a completely separate topic, suggesting that the administration’s deportations are removing dangerous and violent criminals. It did not address the topic of whether the CECOT deportees were truly among those dangerous aliens, or whether the deportations were legal, or whether sending people to that prison is a human rights violation.
“60 Minutes should spend their [sic] time and energy amplifying the stories of Angel Parents, whose innocent American children have tragically been murdered by vicious illegal aliens that President Trump are [sic] removing from the country.”
If Bari Weiss wants the team to cover that separate story, she can assign reporters to it.
To the greater point: It is NOT the job of the news to report both sides of the issue accurately. It is the job to report the FACTS accurately. Presenting opposing interpretations of the facts belongs on the editorial page, not in the news.
Nobody in the administration has challenged the accuracy of any part of the report.
Fox and its running mates have no intention of presenting anything down the middle. Their intent is to be a constant propaganda asset for Trump and his people. The last I looked the “legacy media” actually try to present news where Fox and friends are a watered -down version of the Volkischer Beobachter or Pravda. Btw, this comes from a moderately conservative ex-Republican.
It’s been what? 24 years or so since Wm R. Murrow’s network accepted Dan Rather’s resignation, not for getting the facts wrong, but for using one source that was sketchy.
Now, they’re covering up a story in case Trump’s ass *might* have that not-so-licked feeling. And along comes Weiss to double down on not running it after actual journalists have gotten it out.
In a HANDBASKET, I tells ya!!
I’ve seen a documentary on the type of policing done in El Salvador available on Youtube. It’s made the country safer, but they went from arresting obvious gang tattoos with the type of identification that gang members don’t typically do in other countries, to arresting anyone with a tattoo. Then they went to arresting anyone, period, men who worked as street vendors because police are given a quota they had to meet and the guy was at the wrong place at the wrong time at the end of a shift and was taken in.
No due process, no information on the arrested, they’ll be kept for months in jail and then suddenly released if they weren’t sent to CECOT. Plenty don’t make it out alive. Lots of people sent to Hell on earth who were on the wrong side of a quota system by an authoritarian government that will gladly send innocent civilians inside for the rest of their life based on the whims of state employed thugs who could take anyone in for any reason. Instead of citizens fearing the criminal gangs and bloodshed outside, they’ll be inside for the same reason, only now with men in uniform.
Quota system….hmmm, sounds like ICE
Once the government begins a crackdown like that, it’s not easy to put the brakes on. They started with the best intentions – to make the streets safe. On the plus side, I understand it is now one of the safest countries in Latin America, although that’s kind of like being the most likable Kardashian.
I did a market study for Shell in El Salvador in the mid 90s. I remember that the people there were really nice to me and very receptive to the notes I gave them. I remember that the Pacific coastline was incredibly beautiful. I also remember automatic gunfire in the streets of the capital at night.
I left wondering how such a naturally beautiful place as Central America, filled with such kind people, got so deeply fucked-up.
Thank you, Spain, the USA and (for some countries) the United Fruit Company.
MORE people will see it now. Tell me again about how the billionaires are so much smarter and better than actual people.
“Censorship by Oligarchy“
Good story, but they bury the lede. The point isn’t that these aren’t all terrorists, it’s that no fucking human should be treated like this.
Back when Solzhenitsyn’s Gulag Archipelago came out, we were better than the commies because we were the country that didn’t do shit like this. Now, with no commies to have to look better than, we do it ourselves. It goes back farther I’m sure, but really started cranking up with Sonny Bush’s “extraordinary rendition”. Obama could have shut it down, didn’t.
Part of America First is the assumption that America *should* be first – that we may not be The Good Place, but at least we are The Better Place. Maybe in 37 months we can start getting back to that. Bets?
This is so much the Streisand effect. More people ended up watching it because they buried it.
Carlin:
“It’s a big club, and you ain’t in it. And by the way, it’s the same big club they use to beat you over the head with all day long when they tell you what to believe. All day long beating you over the head in their news media telling you what to believe, what to think and what to buy. But there’s a reason. It’s the same reason that this country will never, ever, ever be fixed. It’s never gonna get any better. Don’t look for it. Be happy with what you got. Because the owners of this country don’t want that. I’m talking about the real owners now, the big wealthy business interests that control things and make all the important decisions. Forget the politicians. The politicians are put there to give you the idea that you have freedom of choice. You don’t. You have no choice. You have owners. They own you. They own everything. They own all the important land. They own and control the corporations. They’ve long since bought and paid for the senate, the congress, the state houses, the city halls, they got the judges in their back pockets and they own all the big media companies so they control just about all of the news and information you get to hear. They got you by the balls. They spend billions of dollars every year lobbying, lobbying, to get what they want. Well, we know what they want. They want more for themselves and less for everybody else, but I’ll tell you what they don’t want: They don’t want a population of citizens capable of critical thinking. They don’t want well informed, well educated people capable of critical thinking. They’re not interested in that. That doesn’t help them. That’s against their interests. They don’t want people who are smart enough to sit around a kitchen table to figure out how badly they’re getting fucked by a system that threw them overboard 30 fucking years ago. They don’t want that. You know what they want? They want obedient workers. Obedient workers. People who are just smart enough to run the machines and do the paperwork, and just dumb enough to passively accept all these increasingly shittier jobs with the lower pay, the longer hours, the reduced benefits, the end of overtime and the vanishing pension that disappears the minute you go to collect it, and now they’re coming for your Social Security money. They want your retirement money. They want it back so they can give it to their criminal friends on Wall Street, and you know something? They’ll get it. They’ll get it all from you, sooner or later, ’cause they own this fucking place. The table is tilted folks. The game is rigged, and nobody seems to notice, nobody seems to care. Good honest hard-working people — white collar, blue collar, it doesn’t matter what color shirt you have on — good honest hard-working people continue — these are people of modest means — continue to elect these rich cocksuckers who don’t give a fuck about them. They don’t give a fuck about you. They don’t give a fuck about you. They don’t care about you at all — at all — at all. And nobody seems to notice, nobody seems to care. That’s what the owners count on; the fact that Americans will probably remain willfully ignorant of the big red, white and blue dick that’s being jammed up their assholes everyday. Because the owners of this country know the truth: it’s called the American Dream, because you have to be asleep to believe it.”
