French/Belgian drama, AKA L’Amour Ouf
Raised in a troublesome neighborhood, local rebellious teenager Clotaire falls for his schoolmate Jackie, charmed by her fearless spirit and sharp wit. As powerful first love blossoms between the two, rampant gang violence entices him into a much darker path and ultimately destroys all they have built when he is charged with a crime he didn’t commit. After many years apart, now leading profoundly different lives, the star-crossed lovers discover that every path they’ve taken leads them back together, but will love triumph over Clotaire’s quest for revenge?
This is a film that scores high at IMDb (7.3), but was generally excoriated by the critics. It was the lowest-rated film in official competition at the 2024 Cannes Film Festival. Screen Daily’s “Cannes Jury Grid” gave the film a rating of 1.3 out of 4 stars.
Hollywood Reporter opined:
A hodgepodge of movie clichés and overwrought scenes, directed with zero tact and plenty of pounding needle drops, actor-turned-director Lellouche’s third stab at the helm is less a disappointment than a serious assault on the viewer’s intelligence.
